Buy an R1 and go looking for people on CG125s turning right. Once you find one, fly past them at double the speed limit, pisses them right off.

Trust me, you'll never get bored of that! Thumbs Up

You can filter around town, nicely on a CG. I used to when I had one.

What I recommend, is make your self visible, lights on , high viz etc.

I sit near to the line and I am constantly watching cars fronts wheels.
(Dont watch the car, watch the wheels, so if they turn you can react quickly).

Always look for an escape, if a car pulls over, do you have a gap to go
over to the other side of the road. (if not stay back).

Watch out for junctions, right turns, filter boxes etc. Always be ready on the brake.

Good luck, its the main reason I use the bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Theres road works near where I live and the lady next door is setting off 30 mins earlier, just to do the 1 mile journey, I needed to go to the dentists this morning. If I had gone in the car it would have taken 30 - 40 minutes.

On bike, it took about 2 minutes, filtered all the way to the front and the lights changed. (RESULT!!!)

Ohh if you get lost all the time, buy a tank map.

Hi,

I'm not filtering in moving traffic at the moment, just in traffic at a complete standstill Smile

I used to be scared to filter, but one day, whilst sitting sweating waiting in a traffic queue, thought to myself "I've got a bike - use it". That's one of the benefits of being on a bike, being able to make progress where cagers can't. Remember to filter at a safe speed and only if it's safe to do so. Watch out for cars turning out from side roads from a gap in the queue, which you may not see when coming alongside the queue - they may not see you either. I only filter if the road is wide enough and when there is no oncoming traffic. Once the traffic starts coming the other way, I find a suitable place to pull back in the queue. If it's a queue of traffic waiting at traffic lights, I nver go right to the front of the queue but go as close as I can to the front and pull in wherever there's a space, sometimes between cars but usually alongside a car. And I raise my hand to the driver to say thanks for letting me in.

Why do you never go to the front of the queue? I've heard quite a few people mention that!

I just prefer not to go to the very front of the queue, but that's just me. It seems a bit rude to me and neither do I want to appear to be an impatient git!

But the point is that you take up far less space than a car, and you get away from the lights much more quickly than any other vehicle, no? So I don't see anything wrong going up to the very front. Most car drivers do not seem to mind, at least in London. You do get the occasional git in a van trying to run you off the road, but that's to be expected!

Toby R:

It happens to everyone. Don't worry about it. just as athletes, musicians etc have off days, so do bikers. I've been riding for years and just yesterday I was continually making slight mistakes (bad rpm selection, positioning etc.). Today I'm back to normal. Give it a few days, and take up the suggestions of others regarding long, unusual rideouts. I once went out to get a newspaper and found myself in Cambridge (well, I did notice I'd passed the newsagents). Good luck.

You might also want to think about some professional training - a day or at the least a few hours won't cost that much and will be well worth it if the instructor can help lift your general confidence and address the issues you mention.

Otherwise, just like the other posts say, don't be overly self critical and worry too much about your mistakes - the key thing is that you learn from them.

Maybe your bored because your pioneering to do something that is boring anyway....FILTERING?! If your bored of riding youv either found something that isnt for you or your not exploring what your bike can do. It doesnt matter what bike you have. I started with a Cagiva Mito when I was 17, within 3 months I had great fun exploring the limits of the bike, every journey was adrenaline filled. 5 years on (WITH NO RIDING IN BETWEEN) and Iv just purchased an RSV mille, after 2 hours riding it id upped the roundabout speed to 50mph, scraped the pegs, wheelied it, and to be honest the fun levels were on par with the mito. There were times on the mille when I got bored too, eg long straights, 30 mph limits etc! Its you riding the bike, you can control whats fun and what isnt. I bet if you went out on the CG and pushed it a little youd come back with a grin on your face! Thumbs Up

Toby

I noticed from your profile that you're from Liverpool, and I understand your worries about riding around the city - I was at uni there a few years ago, and used to cycle around and the state of the roads was pretty bad then.
My suggestion would be to go out ont the bike during the weekend and head over the Mersey (best use the tunnel - gets a bit wet otherwise!) and just go for a drive!! Aim for Chester and go via Port Sunlight for example. Don't worry about getting lost as Liverpool isn't too difficult to find. Take your time, find some roads you like and ride them a few times to see how it feels taking different lines through corners.

Just remember... How can you get lost if you're not going anywhere in particular!! Wink

Thanks for that!

The road I'm talking about, if you know Liverpool... Is coming from the fire station towards the mini garage and Old Hall Street (I turn right at the mini garage to go past the albert dock and the cunard buildings etc onto Brunswick and Aigburth) and the roads are unbelievably shonky!

Heard of lots of people recommending Skelmersdales to practice roundys too!

It's been 10 years since I was in Liverpool, and I didn't ride bikes back then. Just remember the state of the roads on my pushbikes wheels!! Confused

Apart from the commuting roads that you have to drive to get to work, you should be actively going out and getting to know the surrounding area. Lose your bearings, find them again, get out of the city and enjoy the countryside!! The roads will be better there too!! Go to bike meets, find other people with bikes to ride with - Take up the offers of a North Wales trip. The A5 is still one of the best roads I've ridden!

Have Fun!!

lol, I remember when I first started filtering...

I was on my way through doncaster and i'd never filtered before as i was always too scared, I saw the gap in between the cars, looked behind me to make sure it was clear and slowly filtered down through them... the lights turned to green and i attemped to accelerate really hard on my little 125 - slowly beating the cars off of the line... As it was really busy I did this the whole way through doncaster and have done it ever since all the time.

I tend to wait if im not in a rush and I know i can overtake them all when it splits off into a dual carriageway...

i agrue with you here i always leave one car in front but also to do with my RS have a long 1st gear so hard to beat much on the line, cars seem to think that you want a drag race it you go right to the front (well most do to me) esp. when my spark plugs needed changing so when i stoped i have to keep reving!!!lol

Toby R a good tip that i used to do when learning to filter was to wait for a bike to come along and follow them while they filter and watch how they move and react and "copy" their technique in a sense. that what i did anyways! Thumbs Up

Not bored of riding, but frustrated. My bike hasn't enough power to overtake, but sitting behind a slowpoke doing 45 on the straights and 30 on the corners takes most of the enjoyment of riding a good road away. Confused There's only one cure of course. Smile

Cocked up the first attempt on the U-turn, cocked up the second by not paying enough attention and being indecisive (lane discipline and overrunning a stop line at a give priority chicane thing). Got it rebooked for later this month. I really should have passed it on both of those occasions, as the first had 2 minors, and the second none other than those majors. Brick Wall

I've still a fairly long list of bikes I like the look of, all naked things between 400 (CB400 SF) and 650 (KLR, Pegaso, that sort of thing). That is excepting the gpz. I can't say I'm interested in anything more sporty though, comfort is fairly high on my list.

get out of this commmutor riding rut your in, theres nothing worse than switching your brain of riding to work all the time ,nonsense, find the old main roads that are now bypassed and ride in any direction till your bum gets a bit sore ,stop have a drink and a wander around ,look fot others going for a ride and tag along ,maybee stop and have a chat and just enjoy your bike and ejoy other peoples company who enjoy doing the same thing you do ,you will soon find an excuse to go out for your next ride even if its to meet up with some newfound friends

Most of the time I'll go the front if I'm goind straight on at the light, if I'm turning and cant get back into a gap in the traffic I just position the bike so the car behind has to let you in.

I've been riding 5 years and still get lost.

I still make cockups after 6+ yrs of riding. Was out on Sunday for a blast and nothing felt right, didn't read signs properly, judged my entry speed wrong etc and was shouting at myself to sort it out!

Everyone has their 'off' days you just learn from them. Get yourself along to some of the local meets near you and hook up with a few other peeps, makes all the difference to the enjoyment you get from a rideout.

*note to self, drink Red Bull before next rideout! Wink

Oh and I get sooo lost I now use a GPS to find places! lol
