So there I was, on me way to work, heading up a road I use every day from the A41 around the back of Bushey. It's not the widest road in the world, just your usual two-lane affair, but there were a few gaps, so I'd passed an AA truck and a few cars. Anyhoo, further up the road, I see a red Fiesta coming along, so I nip in behind the next car, so he can pass. He then moves over to his left (toward the kerb), so I thinks "Nice bloke, he's given me some room" (as you would). So I move to overtake the car I'm following and as I'm moving out, I can see blokey driving the Fiesta frowning, shouting and demonstrating a "thumbs down" motion repeatedly!

WTF?

I solemnly swear, some people are born strange...

Is thumbs-down not the universal sign for "watch out - speed camera/old bill" ahead? Shocked

Possibly, but I think unlikely whilst frowning and shouting... Laughing

Oh, he was flashing his lights too! (and there wasn't a speed trap further up...)

Pulled onto a roundabout and joined one of the few NSL roads round here at the weekend.

Got up to speed briskly and soon caught up with a tarted up Sierra - you know, black windows, black lights, dustbin exhaust.

He starts weaving about, flashing his lights, indicators on and off. It was pretty clear to me if I tried to pass him he'd make life difficult.

Half a mile further on I looked down - and my indicator was still on.

Polite wave, he waved back, everything was sweet.

Don't always assume the worst!

Erm, the dude was clearly irritated with the fact I was overtaking vehicles. He was wearing his "angry face"! Laughing

And to think, I even gave him a nod to say thanks!

True, with eye contact all becomes clear!

Got off mine and pushed it down the pavement last night - that seemed to bring more smiles than anything else. Was bloody knackered when I got past the queue though.

Some people just like to be road captains. They think anyone overtaking is the spawn of the devil.

I no what you mean about some car drivers, it was your usual que at the traffic lights, crawled up 2 the front along side a corsa, I positioned slightly infront. Turned amber, i was quick as a flash, checked my mirrors to slighty move in, and there he was engine screaming, not letting me in, so i dropped back, 30 seconds later, i overtake him, what was all that about!!!??

Why not just wait 'til the car had passed you and there was nothing in the oncoming lane? Question

I'd personally think it a bit careless/rude of you to "filter" between two cars moving at some speed in opposite directions - if that's what you meant that you did?

Filtering between slowly-moving vehicles in town is another matter Wink

It was a wide enough road for me to pass, but to get inside to the normal road position would not have been impossible as I would of had to pick up about 70mph as he was really trying hard to race me, so yeah I did let him pass, but it annoyed me, i do it all the time at that traffic light, and i'm sure most bikers do without getting problems from idiot drivers.

Sorry Barney, I meant my post to question cbrbiker Thumbs Up - my mistake for not quoting what I was responding to.

I do what you described at traffic lights - filter up the middle if there's room (and room on the far side of the junction too) but I haven't yet encountered anything that could keep up from a standing start Wink

In my experience, I think SOME cagers think they own not only the whole lane of their own side of the road, but also about 2 feet of the lane on the opposite side of the road.

Riding home from work the other night, I was filtering passed a very long queue of standing traffic. I was on MY side of the road but very close to the centre line. I couldn't believe the number of cars approaching in the opposite direction who were flashing their lights, honking their horns and giving the 'tosser' sign at me.

Apart from filtering (which isn't 'really' allowed), I wasn't actually doing anything else wrong, and I certainly wasn't putting anyone else in danger or forcing anyone to alter their course.

Gets a bit annoying at times, but I suppose we have to live with it Exclamation

Probably the same drivers who straght-line roundabouts, regardless of whether there is a vehicle next to them, or the same drivers who cut across the centre-line on right-hand bends Thumbs Down

WRT to filtering in town - it's not something I do a lot of as I don't commute or tend to ride in towns much. I only really do it up the middle of traffic queued on dual-carriageways, and very rarely between oncoming lanes. I usually nip into a gap if there's something coming the other way, waiting til it's passed me.

Now THAT I can associate with, on a daily basis. And they're the bloody dangerous ones. Yet, they probably sit there in their tin can saying something like "look at the way that stupid twat is riding his/her bike, no wonder they get killed" Exclamation

Don't you just hate them ?

you know i used to think we shd just accept not all drivers are gonna be as we wd want them to be. I used to think kicking wing mirrors off was a bit harsh. Now im thinking i shd get some practise kick tin cans off traffic cones as practise, so that if i ever feel like kicking off a mirror i can do it with ease.

I probably wdnt tho as id be thinking what if they get my reg and ring the police. If i did it once the police would ignore it but if i made it a regular thing they might get involved. Id say there is at least one car a week that deserves a kick, so I better not start.

some car drivers really hate bikes. the other day i was coming out of a tunnel (lewes, sussex) as passenger in a car and was weekday and around 5-6 so lots of commuter bikes out and a comuter bike came past (didnt see what it was) and we moved over to let him past as i always make card im in move over for bikes Thumbs Up and a 306 two infront moved right into the middle as the bike got behind her and then he managed to get past and she went back in, so only did it to block him Crying or Very sad

i think that car drivers should accept that bikers overtake in ques and never try to stop them!

wewerefollowing a guy on a BMW RS1100 (i think) i wasnt that keen on his rideing he seemed to be drifting about abit and him and his pillion had matching helmets pants and jacket Rolling Eyes anyway further down the poor sod nerly got killed by a stupid prick cager overtakeing about 20 cars doing 80MPH on Solid whites in a 40 zone Confused
i sometimes get people trying to beat me at lights when i filter up, usualy its White van men :/ or the odd boi racer but nether stay in my mirrors long enough. or alternativley if ive moved back into the que (if the trafic starts moveing again, most taxi drivers wont let me back in! they will sit right on my wheelnut and forse me back out of the lane Khunts (<<what a word saw it in annother post Very Happy)

theres nothing we can do however, bar cope with it and ride knwoing that some people have a unjustified view of bikes, or maybe they got too close to matlock or shurban or annother bike meet plase and got smoked by too many sunday riders that it pissed them off that much!

Every time i get the opportunity I knock on the window and ask why. So for example, if a taxi driver was being obnoxious, I'd ask what his problem is. Not only cabbies. It's quite funny to see them speechless. If they've got something to say, it falls on deaf ears and a load of abuse anyway. All in the name of good fun. Part of the pleasure of not being caged and being free to communicate with other road users, then having the speed to get away if the guy is bigger than me!

I was waiting behind a car. I only moved to overtake because he'd moved over to the left and I thought he was giving me some space. That's what I do for bikes when I'm in the car. He was already flashing his lights and screwing at me before I'd even carried out the overtake! He was just annoyed at me for overtaking the traffic before he was even anywhere near! It's a straight road, so he saw me overtaking before we arrived at each other.

I was in no way posing any danger to him whatsoever. I was happy to sit and wait behind the car I was following until he'd passed. There was still room to overtake once he'd gone by.
