Im having trouble fitting the steering damper. Its a side mount one for a ZXR400. I have a few questions -

1. How high on the fork leg does the clamp need to be
2. How much is the rod ment to stick out the side (near your leg)

If anyone has a side mounted damper (any bike) please can you stick a picture here so I can figure it out (didnt get instructions)

Thanks, Kurt

You might want to ask Zxr400er as he has a side mounted steering damper (i think).

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=57030.

There's the link to his pics of his bike but not 100% sure if its fitted in them pictures. I also think the steering damper is purple so its a bit hard to tell from those angled pictures. Thumbs Up Wink

Thanks for that gauliouses.

I have two ideas of fitting (both illustrated by Monet, I mean me Cool

1. The loop in the end of the rod connects directly to the frame. The square clamp is connected onto the damper, and is bolted on to the fork clamp. This means that the rod will not get in the way of my leg, and has about an inch gap from the front fairing, but as the fairing and frame are solid, shouldnt get any closer/further.

2. As in the picture by Gaulious - the fork clamp is bolted through the hole in the end of the rod, and the clamp that holds the damper part is bolted onto the frame. My original idea, but the rod gets in the way of the leg.

What do you lot think, I want to use idea 1 - anyone else done this?

I have a side mount on my ZRX, it goes on like the 2nd drawing. The first one is completely backasswards.
Bolt the fork clamp on loosely, attach damper. Put frame clamp on the damper assembly loosely & then bolt that to the frame.
With both ends loosely attached you can fuck about until you get the distances sorted on full lock left & right. When ya get it so nothing hits anything else & you have full steering travel tighten all the bolts.

and yes, it's suppsed to flap about like a whore drawers when your done.

Im not expert mate but I've never seen a damper fitted that way, If it works fare play but make sure it does work properly, at best it wont do anything and you have wasted your cash, at worst it could fetch you off.

Best bet ring the company that made the damper, and get fitting instructions mate.

Infact is that your damper in the pic, made by Sprint, they are just down the road from me, Could see if i can get fitting instructions for you over the weekend.
