Anyone know the relative merits and demerits of them?
Are USD forks superior to RWU, or is it just a fashion thing? ____________________ Space Monkey #7

Not sure, seems USD are just for looks. And they do look well. ____________________ Northern Irish? www.nibikers.com |

Isn't it something to do with less unsprung weight? ____________________ Mungel

USD forks have less unsprung weight, so you can get better suspension performance, with less mass to wang up and down on the springs. They've plenty of bling factor, but are unneccesary on most machines. A bit like radial brakes. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

Yes, afaik its unsprung weight, unsprung weight makes a far biger difference to handleing than loping off sub frames e.t.c. might give a better ride as well...
For the difference it makes for everyday rideing though.. i prefer the propper way up, all that shiney gear getting covered in road shat and being hit by the tar covered gravel that councils seem to think is "resurfaceing"
Main reason road bikes has it is tart factor, much like radial brakes, it will knock off .5 seconds off your lap time but make fark all difference on the road (where you can't use 50% of the brakeing on a modern bike...)
/Beaten to it, must type faster.. ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

Could be talking crap but doesn't it make it easier to sort out the yokes when there misaligned or something like that. Overheard it from a couple of bikers at the Ball so ____________________ Enjoy Life There's Plenty of Time to be Dead

As a point of interest.....ok maybe not but I will say it anyway. When my mate got a RD350 YPVS(RWU) his old man who used to race bikes in the 50's thought it had upside down forks!! So I reckon its a fashion thing

I've had 2 bikes with RWU (NC30 and ZX6R) and 2 bikes with USD (RS125 and GSXR750). The ones with RWU's handled better, although thats nothing to do with the actual forks themself but still shows that USD's dont really make a huge difference. ____________________ My bikes are at https://www.bikepics.com/members/dynamight/ |
