Do you have to have an L plate on both front and back of the bike?

Yup.

3 points on your licence for each one that's missing.

The rear L on my NSR was always getting ripped off, so in the end I just put a spare under my seat.

I got stopped once for something else, and they didnt have a problem since they could see that the bits of plastic on the numberplate left over from the previous L plate.

But just because I was lucky and got a decent copper, doesn't mean you will...

Mines 25% torn on the back... I have one of those thick magnetic ones with the corners hole punched out on the front... much more durable.

Well, they probably don't want to 'spoil' the look of their bike.
But when they get a fine and points, they will be sorry. I have seen it happen.

Trust me, it is the LAW for someone who does not hold a full bike licence to have an L on the back and one on the front too Thumbs Up
It's just not worth the risk for two little squares of plastic..

Its also an offence to have L plates on a bike that is being ridden by a full motorcycle licence holder.

(no R1 with L plates jokes then) Laughing

And they have to be red with the full white background.

I saw some ped boi who didn't want to spoil the look of his bike, it was black and yellow, so he used yellow duct tape for the front L plate. Good luck with that!! Rolling Eyes

Yea, as everyone seems to know, its definitely Red L's on White backgrounds, front and back.

Found from experience that they are stolen a lot as pranks, and the police are actually quite okay if you are genuinely not realising some little monkey has stolen it.

One suggestion, although a bit time consuming, is to get the bolt ons, and take em with you if possible wherever you go, take them OFF the bike.

It's what i do, stick them under the seat..five minute job at maximum, and it saves 3 points, being tugged etc etc.

Just an idea of course.

(I've seen shops selling just RED L's everywhere..why are they sold if they aren't legal? that makes no sense really..and people buy them..)

After losing countless stick on/tie on/magnetic ones i got some proper bike ones like the riding schools use.

The one on the front has a metal bracket riveted to it which is bolted to the fork and the rear one was very stiff and was drilled and bolted to the numberplate. They never came off or were stolen.

The front one tends to split vertically, using the rivets as stress raisers, and the rear tends to fatigue fracture along the line of the bottom of the number plate, as it bends across it repeatedly.

Mine suffered a fair amount of abuse being pushed into things when parking I'll admit. Now I've got a magnetic vinyl rear bolted on: flexible and very tough, so no fatigue fractures. The front I ripped from the rivets with some pliers and wired it below the headlamp with some green plastic coated garden wire. Laughing

They do the job, I'll get them off soon if I can ever get this test passed. Rolling Eyes

i have only ever ridden with a rear only on the backa nd nothing on the front, almost 1 1/2 now and done this with two bikes and no problems, it helps when taking over i think as people done think your a learner till you pass them.

I had a plastic one for a year on the back and snapped it off when reversing into my gate (very slowly and on purpose, but it stressed it and it snapped.) I found a good replacement is to buy some of the sticky ones (£1), find some stiff cardboard stick it on and cut out around it. I have no idea how good this is long term, as I only did it to sell my bike. Laughing

19 years ago when I had to have L plates, I stuck the front one on the top of the front mudguard,, which you could only see from above. It turns out this is against the regs and people are getting done for this now, your front L has to be vertical.

Pass your test and no more horrible L (horrible hell ! )

Of couse you've got somewhere to put it on the front, attach it to the fork leg, do not rap it around the fork leg though.

Like zen dog said it depends on what copper you get, but when I was a learner I only used a back L plate because my front L plate stuck out the side, I hated it. When i got pulled over I said I was on the way to the garage to get a new one, worked 3 times!!

But you might not be as lucky.

You need to go to a motorcycle shop to buy bike L plates. Halfords and the rest don't sell them. L plates for the front of the bike come with a bracket fixed on that you attach to the forks. About £3.50 for both front & rear.
