Hi,

I'm still looking for my next bike, still can't decide...

I need it to be somthing reliable, not super sporty, but not a cg125 either (no offence).

I've just had a look at an old 79' CB750, with all the fairing on and panniers, and it looks right up my street.

Thing is i'm worried about power, i'd have to have it restricted down to 33bhp, would it still be a good runner?

Anyone got any history with these bikes?

I don't mind doing a bit of tinkering around on the old jaloppy, but i'd like it to be reliable when i'm out on the road.

Other bikes i'm looking at at the mo are:
Honda Roadster
Dragstar (400 would be great but prob 650)
Kwak GPZ550s
Virago's.

Is the 750 gonna rip my arms off, having only been riding a 125 before?

(Yes I know I was talking about sidecars earlier, but i've given up on that idea now as the other half can be the sensible one as he loves cars)

I'm really kinda stuck, im a 'want it yesterday' kinda person and I just don't know what would be my best choice, theres so much out there in the second hand market (i'm looking to spend upto £1500 max)

CB750's were great in their day, brilliant classic bikes now...

Power is around 75bhp which is bandit terretory.

CB750's being classics ar fairly high maintanence, are heavy bikes and don't much like corners.

Unless yourself or Mr is competent with the spanners and could keep the thing running i would give serious though to spending your £1500 on a modern equivilant such as a divvy or bandit.

I do like the divvy's and bandits too, I just liked this particular 750 cuz it had all the hard case panniers and stuff on....which I guess I could buy seperately.....mm...

I would think the CB750 being so old there wouldnt be a restrictor kit available for the bike. And it would mean running it as per a classic bike.

A Deauville? Although it doesnt have the old naked look you seem to be after. And I'm not sure if there is a restrictor kit for it. It would take to the restriction reasonably well I would assume.

A Kawasaki Zephyr would possibly be a good bike. Or the Later ZR-7. That would leave alot of room for upping the power once the restrictors are taken out, and they are dirt cheap because nobody wants them.

Or just go for the obvious. However should your price be around £1500 I would avoid Bandits personally. Stick to the parallel twins and Diversions.

Describe precisely what your going to be using the bike for, what are your needs from a motorcycle, and be honest with yourself. You dont really need a CBR if your only going to be reaching 120mph for instance, handy to have that performance but perhaps there is a better suited bike out there.

Only going to be reaching 120mph....ahem... Laughing

I'll be sticking well within the speed limits, I won't be doing track days, i'll mainly be using it to go run errands, and when I can escape for longer go for a quick blast out in the countryside.

I prefer the styling of the cruisers to the sports, and I like em noisy (but legal).

I fancy a nice dirty lookin 80's style bike, maybe a hard tail chop done by 'mad dog bob' in his shed...or summat.

But with plenty of room for my shopping Laughing

Well if your planning to ride legally, then there is no need to restrict a bike, just get one thats 33 or less to start with, it will still break every speed limit in the land!

The Kawasaki I was refering to, the ZR-7 can be seen here. https://www.bikebros.co.jp/images/wallpaper/kawasaki/kawasaki_zr7_01_1024.jpg

If your of a small build (like myself) then also consider the CB400SF(superfour). A grey import but a lovely bike none the less. Most Universal luggage will be able to fit as this was never an official UK model. Pics here. https://www.dvmoto.ru/images/archiv_foto/honda/honda_cb400_superfour_1992/honda_cb400_superfour_1992.jpg

For cruisers the Virago range seem's pretty good, styling wise I find them ok, and they probably do the job fine.

Someone with better cruiser knowledge can probably help. I'd avoid a hard tail chop like the plague unless you want your pelvis shattered. Laughing
