This forum gets a lot of "What bike should I get" type posts, doesn't it? Is it because men are indecisive?

Before I got my bike, I went to all the local showrooms and sat on loads of different bikes to get the feel of the weight and height (which were the most important things for me), and test rode a few secondhand models, including doing some refresher lessons at a riding school who used the bikes I had on my shortlist. I settled upon a GS500F which I found to be the most suitable for me.

I always knew I wanted a ZZR as my next bike (I wouldn't have bought this as my first getting-back-into-biking bike as it would have been too heavy for a rusty rider) so when I saw a local dealer selling a secondhand one, I rushed down there and took it for a spin. I absolutely loved it and it reinforced my decision that this was going to be my next bike.

Of course, it's good to get opinions of other people, but I also think you've got to be pro-active yourself in making your mind up. And don't have a shortlist of too many otherwise it will become far too confusing and you'll never make a decision.

I think that just life in general. Some people are spending alot of money and they just want to make sure it's the right decision.

Colinwall on the other hand, now he's a different story. Razz

umm, cheap shot! Laughing
anyway, i think its due to the fact that a lot of people that use the forum when they are starting riding don't know that many "real" people that ride bikes. so they ask on here as its probibly better to ask a stranger that has no hidden agenda (i.e wanting your money). and its likely that some one on this forum has ridden the bikes they are thinking about getting.
plus it good to get as many opinions as possible as buy a bike for the first time can be rather worrying!
hopefully the people asking the question are doing all the other things you say. but it can be hard as there is a huge desire just to get a bike and ride it asap!

Experienced riders can tell you whether the bike itself is any good with no vested interest in lying, and also whether it sounds like the one you're thinking of buying is a lemon.

i went to cmc on my gpz the second day after they opened to have a gander at what was on offer. sat on a few bikes, ignored the sales mans banter
the next day i went down at 9am in the morning i went down and sat there for 2 hours,, then rode to work on a spankingly sexy zzr1200.
sod all this what bikes best thing,, just get down to a shop and sit on em,, ya never know.
i just looked and sat on the zzr and decided that i wanted it

Yeah, that's more or less what happened to me. When I was looking at what bikes were around, I saw a picture of the 2005 silver ZZR 600 and it took my breath away. It was then that I knew this would be my next bike. Like I said, when I rode one that was that, and I ordered a new one that same day!

Hi

Some of the dithering is part of the pleasure of buying a bike for some people.

Lots of bikes I fancy. Few that I will realistically own.

All the best

well its harder for some of us younger ones as some places dont have insurance for under 25s. So we either have just look at the bike or try someone elses that may paint a different pic of the bike when i got my sv from a dealer i was lucky that they had that insurance for under 25s but they wouldnt let me out the city so i had to trundle along in the city being followed not fun at all

It is good to get an unbiased oppinion on a bike.

Frankly, the couple of times I have done one of those threads, it is more to get people thinking about how there is more to life than just sports-bikes rather than a genuine need for advice Wink

Plus I like talking about motorbikes.

Anyway. How dare a woman suggest men are indecisive when it comes to buying stuff. At least we will go into a motorbike shop bercause we are looking to buy a motorbike rather than wandering in and out of every bloody shop on the high street "Just to see if there is anything I like.".

Yeah, fair point! Wink

OK, I concede. I'm sorry a couple of you considered my post boring and rated it accordingly, but to be honest, I was finding all the 'what bike should I get' posts boring too.

However, all the replies posted are very valid and I can now appreciate that there is a lot of value in people asking the forum what bike should I buy.

I don't think you did. The answers you received were all positive explaining why.

When it comes to buying bikes men become like women buying shoes. Spend hours visiting different shops, trying different syles, different sizes, different colours, then going back and buying the first one you tried. Laughing

Think what many women would be like if they were buying a £5k pair of shoes.

Smile here I am !
the situation for me is I have passed my test but only get a 1 year no claims bonus in December.

Then I will switch insurers and get a bike.

If I tried to add a big bike to my existing policy, it would cost a lot more than I am willing to pay. Im not gonna stay with my current insurer as they are quite expensive compared to others.

I have been scanning ebay since I passed and have test ridden a few different bikes. I agree with kickstart that weighing up the options is half the fun. I was the same when I bought some hifi separates. I ended up getting a good stereo for the money but I spend a lot of time studying hifi mags. great fun

I didnt assume I was gonna get a sportsbike (the obvious choice for someoen who rides a rs125). I tried scooters, big trailbikes and a cruiser, a budget 600 and some sports 600's and a sports tourer.

I am getting a 250 scooter I won on ebay but I dont know yet what motorbike Im gonna get, if I'm gonna get one at all.
If I get one I will probably leave it until march or december.

I have seen a few bargains on ebay and have been tempted (recently by a £300 '90 VFR750).

Bikes are quite cheap for me (29) to insure so I could have several for the price of insuring a ford fiesta.

The obvious choice is not always the best choice. I could have just bought the first bike that I test rode and liked. Nothing wrong with that bike but others have been better.

Originally I was gonna buy a nice bike when I passed my test, but I have ended up lending the money to my girlfriend who was paying silly percent on some of her debt.

I will have a bit more money in a few months time so i might wait until then and get a £2500 bike instead of a £500 bike.

The other extreme is people who buy a bike before they pass their test. Sods law dictates that these people often fail their tests so I wasnt gonna take that risk.

My original plan was to test ride 20 bikes before I buy anything but I have not really stuck to that by getting the cheap scooter. I might try to stick to it before I get a big bike tho.

The only thing is I dont wanna be picking up bikes from miles away in bad weather so it might be better for me to get soemthing before or after the weather gets too nasty.

I think it's all about people's (alright, mainly blokes and young ones at that) obsession with figures and making sure they have the 'best' one... in the eyes of their peers anyway.

How many of the threads end up with a 'but this one does 0 - 60 in 0.2 seconds less than that one, so buy it' kind of thing?

They also give loads of people a chance to wade in with 'advice', lots of which came from what a magazine said once or what their mate who rode a mate of a mate's one thinks.

The 'what bike' thread is a feeler. If BCF don't think it's cool, the real world won't think it's cool. Sod the fact that it suits you perfectly, it won't be cool! Must buy an 05 XYZ 1000 instead!

Bike ownership, for a certain section of society, seems to be one big expensive game of Top Trumps.

yeah i think for some bragging rights plays a factor in what bike they ride. the person who dies with the most toys wins (silver seems to be in the lead at the moment Laughing )
for me when i brought my ninja i just saw it at a decent price and loved the look so i got it. didn't really know that apparently its one of the best handling bike. but if i did doult it would of swayed me either way as its my first sports bike and i have no idea what has good handling and what doesn't as i have nothing to compare it too.

You want the 04 XYZ 996, you do - it doesn't have the emission control power drain of the 05 XYZ 1000. You'll have to have it repsrayed because it's last year's colours though.

Its worth asking for the ideas on bikes you'd never have thought of/knew existed, or to shoot one down that you thought was perfect but the engine reliably explodes 1000miles after the millage on the clock of the one your looking at..

Allthough the pure "what bike should i get, ive got £xxxx" are a bit tiresome... roads its being used on? luggage? height? comfort? speed? faring? e.t.c. all of these are important, one great thing about bikes is they all have their own strengths, but then its still peoples opinion..

Comeing in with a shortlist means people here have an idea of the sort of bike they're looking for...

You only joined in July this year!!! Some of us have been reading this kind of stuff for years!!!

Although it has improved, when I joined it was "which 125 is the fastest" and "My RS125 can do 120mph" Laughing

Suppose, like Stinkwheel says, it is to get an unbiased opinion - let's you find out the characteristics of each bike, peoples experiences with them, common problems etc.
