do you mean moped or scooter?

Moped, RS50 or MX50 probably, though don't ignore others because the aprilias may fall apart.

scooter, don't know, don't care.

No such thing as a speedshite 125, its a 100cc scooter.

The speedshites are pretty nice looking as far as scooters go.

Gilera Runner SP50cc? Piaggio ZIP SP? (thats the important bit 'SP')

One, it will look like a scooter/moped, therefore it will not look sporty. If you want something that hasn't got gears, then you're stuck with something that looks like that pretty much.
If you want cheap and sporty, I'd go with a second hand sports styled 50cc bike, especially if you want it to be 'really good as well'.

Wanting one of the more MOPED style MOPED... Not sport bike style... a REAL descent cheap one. but " brand new "

So you won't get it looking like it's a sports machine if it's infact a shopping machine. There is always a pay off. If you pay a lot, you can get a good machine, if you don't pay a lot, don't expect to get such a good machine.

Ever had the expressions 'have your cake and eat it', or 'moon on a stick'?

ey mate no need for that. The kid asked about scooter style mopeds.

IMO I would get a geared 50cc but he wants a scooter...we know this because he said so.

Give advice on "sports looking scooters" or nothing at all.

And just because his budget is limited doesnt mean he has to buy a crock, if he 'shops smart' he will get a good deal on a nice little scoot.

Lets say I was going on about how I was set on spending £1k on something that a friend thought was a really bad idea for justifiable reasons, but the friend doesn't tell me.
I spend the £1k and find out that it's not what I was hoping, whereupon my friend tells me 'oh yea, knew you wouldn't like it' - I'm going to be a bit pissed off that I wasn't told this before I spent the money.

He wants 'really cheap' and 'really good' and 'new', very rarely do all those things go together. You can get a really cheap scooter off ebay (or even from argos!), but it's unlikely to be very 'good' - or you can get a relatively 'better' scooter from a big name brand, but pay more for it. That's the way the world works in general.

Thus I feel perfectly justified in my comments.

Now if he had come on and said "I want a scooter because of 'x' and a bike isn't suitable because of 'y'", fair enough. But the general attitude suggests that he not only hasn't done simple research, but it seems hasn't really thought about it much either.

Remember, 'peds' get sold by 16 year olds.

Often they are completly fucktarded and if you jump onto one that has no idea how much they are worth you can get a much better deal.

Say mummy and daddy buys little jonny a 50cc speedfight for his 16th birthday. Jonny then wants to sell it and get some money for some heroin or whatever the youth of today buy.

Then he sells it for much less than its worth.

Often with a £500 budget you can get a good scooter! IF you shop smart!

I agree on the mate not telling statement.

But I remember when I was getting my first bike I had a closed mind and thought only "scooter" because I thought I could not ride a 'real' bike (still cant but different matter)

He probably wont be told. so its a waste of text.

You'll note he doesn't want to 'shop smart', he wants to buy new it seems (and still get a really cheap bike that's really good.)

I do appreciate that there's some pretty good deals on scooters second hand.

What 50cc bikes are there about? A sports replica is too flashy and is going to be too expensive, but there are f-all Fizzies and similar about. Confused I'm trying to put my foot down and stop my brother from getting a scooter, but it's proving a bit difficult to find anything cheaply (<£400) which isn't a scooter.

I'd have a look at trail style bikes.

Decent enough performance, less mashed in a crash and have been around for ages for some of them, stuff like the DT50, TS50 and MBX50, AR50 also worth a look.
