Hi,
As you will see I am a new rider & new to this forum.
I am looking for a 600 & would appreciate any views & comments.
The bikes are:
GSXR600 K1 (TPFT £1050 & Comp £1454)
R6 (TPFT £1300 & Comp £1800)
CBR600F (TPFT £1050 & Comp £1454)
Or RS250 TPFT £550 & Comp £1100)

I am in love with the gsxr, unsure if the r6 is worth the insurance, worried I might regret buying the CBR because it's more of a tourer & not sure about the RS because of all the maintainance & having to screw it for it to peform compared to others.
Another part I'm unsure is which insurance to take.
I would like to build up a no claims so in a couple of years I can have a 1000 for good money. Is it worth paying it now for cheaper results in future? Also before I finish I have also had the idea at the back of my head of a 748 if I took on some finance. Would this be a silly idea? Are the maintainance costs extreme & can any local mechanic do servicing?
Would you also advise buying form dealers over private as I have noticed prices are often very close.
Any comments appreciated.
P.S 748 costs same insurance as GSXR & CBR

you looking at new bikes? if so then theres nothing in it, just go for what suits you best, altho RS250 is a bit extreme - more of a second bike for an experienced rider than newbie bike.

how old are you, you ever ridden before etc.

If the CBR6F is "too much of a tourer" then what about the F-Sport? OK, maybe not 'cos it's actually another insurance group higher...I also notice that you haven't bothered looking at the Kwak? (yeah, I don't like 'em either Razz)

I would say Gixer or CBR...but at the end of the day, it's your choice and you should see if you could get some test rides first.

The main problem with the Dook is that not only will you need finance to buy the bike, you'll also need it to maintain it! Contrary to popular opinion (including my own Embarassed), as long you keep the Dooks sweet, you shouldn't have any problems, but I personally wouldn't recommend them if you're likely to rely on the bike for travelling etc.

If you just wanna build up no-claims, then what about a naked 600? A Hornet, Fazer, Bandit, or maybe even the SV are all cheaper to buy and insure (in most cases).

First, if you're a new rider, seriously consider going for a cheaper bike. If you intend to push it and you're a new rider there's a pretty high chance you will crash.

I've got a zx6 and have never had trouble keeping up with my flat mate on a r6... the differences are only going ot come into effect when you're pretty experienced riding on a track, in many 'real world' situations a 'softer' bike will be faster for teh average person.

Best bit is to get some test rides and see which you prefer.

I would suggest something like a unfaired 600 as a first 'big bike', but I presume you;re set on a sports bike.

What cc trail bike?

You should be able to get insurance down a fair bit.

I got my (garaged in Reading) zx6r insured for £500 TPFT last year.

I looked a the ZX6, but it just looked huge, but that was next to a r6. The j1 was my favorite 2 look at though.

I personally think that the last carb-fuelled CBRs looked good, and the fact they're a few years old now should reduce the insurance premium further.

CBR6 a tourer... and heres me thinking I have a lovely little sports bike Wink

I assume you have a full licence?! if so get test rides to see which you prefere

I find the CBR very forgiving, not as likely to turn round and bite you as the R6.

the GSXR never really appealed to me so I didnt look at it

I have the j2.

Parked next to my flat mates r6 it's only very slighlty larger than the r6... and I do mean only *slightly*.

The main difference's are that the position isn't quite so extreme so there's less weight on the wrists for long journeys. And the tank is slightly wider so it feels a little bigger, but only a little.

I think I have used the wrong words with the CBR6. I meant more of a tourer not 'a tourer' I am still tempted by one for the as you say forgiveness it may allow.

CBR in my opinion is a sports tourer. Its got the nice big seat suitable for two with nice comfort.

It has the looks of a sports bike though.

It should ride pretty much as well as the other sportsbikes, so I don't think you can really consider it a sports tourer.

It's like saying teh fireblade is a sports tourer because it's got a slightly more comfortable seating position... or *my* zx9, still pretty comfortable, but I don't think anyone will be mistaking it for a tourer Very Happy

Go for whichever one you prefer after a test ride. Or the one you prefer the looks of. TBH you wont notice much of a performance difference on the road, specially with you being a new rider.

The RS is more decent competition for 400s, allthough it should possibly do better than 600s on really twisty slowish sections of road/track, in the majority of circumstances it's going to be uncomfortable and annoying Sad

I've ridden 'em all except the RS250 which is MENTAL .. don't buy one for the road.. someone said it's an experienced rider's second bike and this is dead right. It's a race bike with lights. I said somewhere else that I was seriously embarrassed by one at Cadwell park.. they have no straight line speed to speak of - compared to my ZX9 but they can keep it nailed through all the fast sweepers, suicidal overtaking and undertaking is essential to maintain track times.

Mid you he did highside it at Mansfield corner tho' and got carted off in an Amblyance with his bike in small bits.

I rode a Ducati 748 on a track for a while and it was the most uncomfortable riding experience of my life, very heavy on the wrists and cramped on the thighs - not really for prolonged road use.

A new(ish) CBR600 is no way like a tourer in my book, they are not far off the lap times of 80's race bikes, it's just that Honda softened them up to make them more user friendly and that sounds like just what you need.

The R6, Gixer, 748 and RS are all a bit extreme for a first big road bike, you won't get the best out of them without extensive track riding to build experience, confidence and speed.

Sounds like the best bet is the CBR (or a ZX6 - which is in a similar league until this years model which is knife edge stuff, built for the track)

Whatever, enjoy and play safe Very Happy
