Right here is my little story to tell all.

On Thursday I went to Alton towers with my girlfriend in the car, I was driving, I kept to the speed limit all the way there, even managed to stay down to 70 on the motorway Confused

We had a fun day and so we stayed overnight and came back yesterday, we were about 5 miles from the house and the traffic built up to a roundabout quite a bit, so using my local knowledge I took a shortcut through some country lanes and came out at a village. Now through the village there used to be a main road, but it got bypassed so it had a 40MPH limit through it, or so I thought, whilst I was learning to drive about a month ago I know 100% certain that it was a 40 and so I came out of the junction and saw some community speedwatch with a speed gun, now I speeded up to 40 believing that was the limit, so I gave them a friendly wave and carried on by, they weren't looking too happy, I then looked back at the speed sign and it had recently been changed to 30MPH without any warning! So I'm cursing and swearing all the way home thinking i'm going to be on 3 points, £60 fine after 6 months of riding or driving, of which I didn;t want to accumulate any points in the car because it's pointless.

What I want to know is, can I get done by the community speedwatch as there were no police present, also I did not see any signs at all warning of speedchecks, isn;t there legislation out there that requires all speedchecks to be conducted within a certain distance of a "speed camera" sign?

I know I am in the wrong here, I was 10MPH over the limit, it was purely an accident of my own part though, but I know for a fact, you and the courts would not take my word for it in court, basically all I wanna know is if I will get points on my licence.

Thanks, Jon.

Just googled it, loads of councils seem to be doing it at the moment. The idea is to monitor speeds around built-up areas, with the aim of reducing the limits if they are too high.

What the websites are saying is that the community speedwatch people will take down your licence plate number and pass it on to the police. The police will then send you a letter warning you of dangers of speeding in such and such area. So, looks like you won't be getting points or fines. I wouldn't have though so anyway, as surely it would have to be a copper with a speedgun, not a civilian?

I believe they did something similar round here recently, bassically some moaning old cunts with nothing better to do get given a speed gun to look menacing, the worst they could do was take your registration down and you get a letter from the police bassically saying 'oi stop it'. I wouldn't worry to be honest.

Cunts, the lot of em, do they have nothing better to do on a Friday afternoon? It's almost as sad as a five year old counting how many red cars they can see. Laughing

I wouldn't worry about it.

If the rent-a-cop is there regularly it would be rude not to take a trip down there with some duct tape over your number plate and a paintball gun.

Sounds like 'Saddo' pensioners and village dwellers who worry about ANYTHING which doesn't fit in with 'their' way of thinking.

Already an active part of Neighbourhood Watch and their local PC has managed to provide them with a speed cam to record evidence of one of their gripes - namely, speeding drivers/riders.

They get your number plate, tell PC Neighbourhood Watch and you 'might' get a letter saying you ought to be more considerate. Otherwise, you'll here nothing. It's just something people want to do in order to increase 'their' quality of life and stop people driving through their road at such a high speed - WOW Shocked

Personally, I would say, unless road signs state otherwise, just drop your speed to 30mph through ANY village. Surely, we were ALL taught on CBT that if there are no road signs in a built-up area, we should assume the speed limit to be 30mph ?

As the others said they can't do you for it.

Does everyone think that a bit of community spirit, people trying to address issues that bother them and trying to make the place safer is such a bad idea?

If they were not there you would not have known the new speed limit and now you will remember it. Hopefully you will now not speed through the village again unless trying to piss them off.

Maybe when your older and have little kids your views will change.

Hi

Fairly certain they cannot do anything, and from what I have heard in the past they stand a high chance of having written down the wrong registration plate anyway.

Probably only doing it because they are too blind to have a licence to drive somewhere more interesting.

All the best

No, I just don't jump on the same bandwagon as everyone else and try to see the issue from both sides.

Is that a bad thing?

Maybe you could try thinking for yourself?

Maybe he's the only one being positive and everybody else is being negative?

I wonder if there are any data protection issues with this though? What happens to the data after it is recorded, and do the Police write to the drivers, or are the addresses supplied to the community group?

Wotcha.

I thought this too - until two years back. This same idea was being trialed down by Ledbury. Local villagers were given speed guns and let loose on the unsuspecting motorist. They soon found out that any vehicle with a company name on the side was a 'soft target', seeing as the company wouldn't want the hassle and they'd just get the driver to pay up. Nice little earner for the powers that be.
As a result - any vehicle with a company name on the side was marked as speeding, even if the bloody thing was parked at the time.

Thanks for all the comments, SP1, yours especially, I'm not bothered about them taking my speed down as such, more that I did not know myself the speed had changed, as sometimes you will get a red sign saying "New Speed Limit" in place. I dunno, I obviously wasn't paying due care and attention to the road.

Even with those statistics, you hit a child at 30mph, 20% of them will die, so perhaps villages and town centres should have even lower limits, like in many European cities (often 30-40km/h, outside schools 20km/h).

If kids learnt to cross the roads safely they'd have a 0% chance of getting killed. So bring back Tufty or the bloke with the dodgy lycra suit. Wink

Only places I ride within the legal limit is 30/40/50 zones. I'm quite strict on it, to the annoyance of other road users. Just don't fancy someone stepping out infront of me.

A few months ago l sore two old men wearing police style flosent jackets in a village by Dorking taking down peoples number plates while pointing a speed gun at them, But unlike the police who give some thought were to st up a speed trap these idoits were standing about 30 meters from a sharpe left and bend, which casued drivers to slam on there brakes when seeing them just after they come out of the bend.

So if anyone one was driving around the bend behind them they would of crashed into the back of the first driver.
