is car oil alright?

only a quickie

i need 2 fill up my bike with oil but iv heard its alright to use car oil

& m8s got casrtol gtx & im about to fill gsxr600 up but b4 i do is it ok to use this?

also its in my manual saying SAE 10w-40 isrecommended & its also on the casrtol GTX bottle to so its ok (i assume) but is it good?
& whats the 10W-40 mean?

NO it's not alright - there's MOTORCYCLE oil and there's CAR oil for a reason ...

oh no! why cant everyone say if its fine or not 1st two replies are yes & no

well oil in there @ the moment is BLACK & bloke i know @ shop filled it up(as it was nearly empty) & once around the block & it was BLACK again already & since then has gone down quite abit aswell but i want to drain it out & fill up again & so on till its clearer/oil colour

If it's Magnatec or anything similarly magnetic then it's NOT ok to put in your bike, it will cause the clutch to slip.

If not, then it should be ok.

10W40 refers to the viscosity (thickness) of the oil at cold, and at running temperature. in cold (I think) it's 10, when it's warm, it's 40.

yeah iv heard about that aswell & no it isnt magnatec its just STD castrol GTX

also i was told that fully syth makes the clutch slip aswell
so use semi(this was a bloke who's been setting up race bikes for 30+ years& reversed my gearing,etc)

but coming from 2-stroke to 4-stroke it was always fully syth in my 2t so is it not as such a big thing on a 4-stroke then?

Some Suzukis suffer chronic clutch slip if run on fully synth, but are perfectly happy on semi synth. Mine runs on 'car' oil and has done for the last 45000 miles and is still on the original clutch plates.

In a gsxr600 I'd use a semi synthetic bike oil.

manual just says 10w-40 which is same on casrtol gtx car oil but its fine so far but ill drain it if anything feels/goes wrong

but so what can ppl recommend as a good gsxr600 oil?

Doesn't it affect clutch slip on bikes like the R1? They add something to car oil IIRC.
Don't bike engines get much hotter too?

They add some stuff to some oils that can provoke clutch slip. 1200 Bandit has had car oil in it most of its life. GPZ500 gets it. FZR600 gets it.

Temp wise they are all about the same really.

actualy most modern car oils use friction reducers, which if you tried to run in a bike with a wet clutch( sits in engine oil) you would find it almost impossible to set off without bouncin it off the rev limiter

Some do, so don't. Try it. You will probably find no problems with the clutch. I don't have a problem using BP semi synthetic or fully synthetic car oil. Only one that has slipped was the Bandit when the engine was tuned, but then that also slipped with brand new clutch plates and bike oil in it.

i would never run car oil in a motor cycle, only run what your owner manual says, or what your dealer suggets

First time Iv even heard of it causing a problem. I could imagine something like magnatec causeing slipping clutches though. Just put any bog standard 10W40 in and itll be fine.
