reving issue

ive got a leaking exhaust on my vfr400 would this cause reving problems or would this be more like my air filter cauing the problem?? by this i mean it seems to be breathless and not as roary as it should be with a race can

Is it a new can?
Has the jetting/fuelling been adjusted for the can?

it was fine when i bought it and it has been jetted to suit , it had no air box cover which i noticed when i had it restricted so a got 1 and fitted it at the same time.then it was breathless which i put down to the restriction kit as they dont like them being fitted on them. but recently i had it de retricted and the carb had been cleaned and has been re balanced but it still seems breathless when i rev it and does flood a little.

If I were you I'd try it without the airbox cover. If it's still the same then I'd go and get it re-tuned but if removing the cover sorts the problem then I'd be looking at changing the air filter to a hi-flow one such as K&N

could it be the exhaust leak at all tho? back pressure ect ?? does anyone know where i can buy a sheet of filter foam from or buy a k&n for an nc30 from if this is the problem

yes it has but it was fitted when i got it and it was set up for it

I'd try plugging the whole in the exhaust, see if that makes a difference, if not I'd suggest you get the mixture checked out, as it sounds like it could be running a bit lean (which is why the bike is running fine on the choke).

A check of the spark plugs would probably confirm this (have a look at the haynes manual there's usually a guide there for spark plug colours/diagnosis).

Take the cover back off the airbox.

Guessing the bike is an NC30. When these are piped and carbed the airbox lid is often cut up or removed so the engine can breath better.

And fix the exhaust.

Do you have an air filter which requires a film of oil on it like the standard Kawasaki ones and the K&N type??

If so, try and get some filter oil spray and give it a coating, i had the same symptons on my ZX10 a while back.

I had a reving problem with my VFR.

Check:
Spark plugs
Coils and leads
Air filter is clean
Fuel diaphragm isn’t blocked
Fix exhaust leak, it can cause loss of power, but not a lot.
Shims, valves

In the end it was the fuel diaphragm for me, it had pulled some shit through from the tank.

right today i took the intake rubber off the airbox cover to get more air to it and it run like crap i mean major bog downs on accelation nearly died on me so i recon it actualy might be running lean rather than too rich in that case this could be due to when i has the carbs balanced after i got it de restricted

the filter on these bikes are paper not foam so are not oiled

It should still be oiled to some degree, hence why most air boxes have an oil rebreather.

theres no metion in the manual or haynes about oiling it, it says to use compressed air but checking it earlier it seemed ok
