Just interested in hearing your personal attitude to riding. Do you ride within the "rules" or get to your destination as fast as possible?

I find it difficult to find people to ride with because I am very cautious when on the bike and don't take risks. I have been on rideouts were people have taken silly chances and have only just got away with it and from a professional point of view have had to deal with two fatal bike accidents in the last 2 weeks. It makes me sad to think that these accidents could have been avoided had the rider not been taking chances.

My approach is take it steady and enjoy the ride, what about you Question

Sorry if this has been posted before but the only other thread I found was worded a bit openly and as result the answers were not a true reflection.

depends. If im out for a spin il take it slow, and enerally ride like i was a car ie, not badly, but not overtaking, filtering etc

if im out to get somewhere, its a no-holes barred battle with the road, high speeds, narrow gaps, and filtering to within an inch of my life lol

If I'm by myself I ride to the book as much as I can but I'm easily led in rideouts to do manouvers/speeds I wouldn't normally do by myself. I think I need to learn a bit more self control when out with other people.

Look after number one first, the cars don't give a shit about you, well half the time they don't even look for ya never mind see ya.
I once rode carefully after listening to the missus, the result was b&b in a strange hospital bed miles from home, the bike a write off like the car I hit, he had no insurance, no tax, no mot and i wasn't even his car. Since then i ride how i see fit to the conditions, as for the style of riding, like I stole it! Very Happy

Depends on the purpose of the ride. If I'm going to work/uni then I'll stick to the rules.

If I've put my leathers on, then road traffic you better watch out!

I have been known to overtake 2 wagons that are side by side at 100mph between the white line and the central reservation going around the outside one on a 2 lane duel carrigeway.

But I consider myself fairly sensible most of the time.

Edit:

Also been known to pull out on a single carrigeway road on the opposite side of the road onto the oncoming traffic lane out accelerate the cars and pull back in infront of the first car thats holding the rest up.

In heinsight these 2 maneuvers that spring to mind were stupid and I was really sticking my neck out.

Also Im not going to sit here and type out that I am the most sensible rider ever because I am not.

We all do stupid things, I am not proud of these I was lucky to get away with them.

Before i became a biker i used to be plodding along in the car and curse stupid bikers who all seemed to be on a mission to get somewhere asap. Overtaking at every opportunity, undertaking while filtering ect

After a couple of weeks of riding i turned into one of the people i used to hate Laughing

Me too, usually. I occasionally ride a bit faster than I perhaps should but generally confine such activity to roads in the middle of nowhere - and slow down again when encountering traffic or the probability of encountering traffic - eg when passing approaching junctions, farm houses, field entrances etc etc.

I also tend to find myself at times riding slower when in a group than I might if riding on my own - my behaviour changes as I need to allow for being in continuous proximity to other traffic.

Plodder, I take my time, I might not make as much money as the other motorcycle couriers but I do take safety very seriously. I do have my moments of madness but they are quite rare. Besides t keeps pc plod off my back. Mr. Green

If I take it stead, I don't enjoy the ride.
If I'm riding in a similar manner to how I would drive, I'd much prefer to have the comforts of a car.

Now I do try and stop myself enjoying road riding often as it's not going to be anywhere near track riding, but do find it hard to resist at points.

The main factor for riding a bike for me is the adrenalin rush I get when I do something incredibly stupid or from riding fast, like passing between cars a 100+ mph its not big or clever but it sure is fun.

Like I always say, you only feel your alive when your near death. Lets just hope you don’t step to close/

Really smart!!!!!

Don't get me wrong, I can shift when I want to (just ask some of the Scottish members) ... and most of the time I do ... but you've got to think of other people.

If you want to wrap yourself around a tree (or whatever) then feel free ... but how'd you feel if your 'adrenalin rush' between two cars at 100mph was to result in the deaths of some kids? ... wouldn't be on a such a high then!!!!

Go out and have fun everyone ... but in the right place at the right time.

All the best ... BanditstHigh

P.S. Oh shit ... starting to get sensible (aye right)!!!!!!

Presuming it's on a motorway here - how much /should/ you try and take precautions to make up for other people's bad driving?

Ok, if you crash while high speed filtering, it may be considered your fault, but if someone else crashes because they haven't been doing regular observations?
If you are trying to stop this, how far do you go?

When I get off my bike I usually feel drained because of concentration.
I’d say my riding style is quick but as safe as I can be, I don’t take high risks like blind corners at top end or coming up to junctions at high speed. I just make sure it is as flowing as possible with not to many stop/starts.

I would describe my riding as well disciplined. I only go quick when i see an opportunity and have properly thought it through. I think it is a good idea to get a move on rather than dawdling behind slow traffic as I tend to lose concentration. I feel I'm safest when I'm fully focused on the job.

All depends what I'm doing and where I'm going. On our ride outs, we have people with different riding styles/skills. The guys who want to play usually just bugger off and we meet up with them later but we always have a couple of riders who are more than happy to stay with us little people and look after us. When I'm on my own though it's usually just a case of get where I want to go, do what I need to do and come home again...unless it's a nice day Very Happy
