Calling all Gixxer owners

First of all i have a Gixxer 600 k4

Now for the problem. Whenever i use the front brake i here a quite noticable knock noise and this also happens when im pushing the bike backwards out the garage and use the front brake to stop.

Now i thought maybe the head bearings were loose or gone so i took it to drayton croft in coventry (official suzuki dealer).

First I phoned the Suzuki human resources department and confirmed with them that this should not be occurring and is covered within the 2 year guarantee.

Back to drayton croft. The guy says the knocking noise is coming from the floating brake disks K4 gixxers have and that it has a little give in them which is making the knocking noise upon applying the front brake.

What i need to know is this guy chatting **** or could it just be the floating disks and nothing to worry about. This was all done a month ago, the knocking noise is now a bit more noticable.

I have heard that floating discs are renowned for knocking.

I don't have floating discs, but have a noise coming from my front brakes. It's not there when I apply the brakes, but is when I don't. Apparently it's related to the backing plates on my R1.

My Gixxer makes a knocking noise occasionally from the front area when I use the brakes, and its an '04 too. I put it in for its 4000 mile service & I thought maybe they would pick up on it then, but they didn't mention anything about it. Therefore I presume its nothing to worry about....or should I?

Could well be warped disks.

My K41000 does it as well and afaik it is normal and as you said, floating discs. If it were warped discs you would feel a very different sensation through the front of the bike.

On another note, i had 2 Gixxer k4's and today wasthe first problem i ever had with one. It wouldnt start. It just whirred when i pressed the ignition swith. Then i just gave it some and it roared upto about 12000 rpm.

Pistons werent too happy i bet!

Thats the only problem i ever had with mine- i hope it will be as well.........

as people have said Floating disks nothing to worry about, i hope..

just ride and see when you speed up dose the knocking get faster or not......

but probably nothing to get stressed over

I've heard the knock a few times myself, i didn't know about floating pads. thanks for clearing this up for me

If the disc(s) were warped you'd probably feel a pulsing through the brake lever on firm braking, or a knocking (but not just a single knock).

How can you not have floating discs on an R1? All modern bikes have floating discs, it just means the disc itself is revitted to the carrier rather than part of it. You will have some freeplay in the rivets, but personally I don't think they should knock. You can check the freeplay with your hands, if the disc is noticeably loose I don't see why you can't get it replaced under warranty, or re-rivetted.

You might also want to check the brake pads, if they're worn and one of the pistons is holding back (stuck) they may rattle inside the calipers and cause a knocking noise.

When the little round bobbins wear a bit they let the disc move slightly causing a clunk noise.

Affects alll floating discs, my FJ1200 and sundry FZRs were the same.

I was told to get them replaced (the pads) every 600 miles, is this just the dealer trying to get more money (altough i will do the work my self).

Once had a rattling from mine (fully floating discs) and it was natural, however, it soon fixed itself.

Could it maybe be something to do with the weather? The disks expanding and contracting due to the coldness? In which case, they might be rubbing slightly in some areas because the disks have expanded to a larger size then they were in the warmer summer months.

I could just be talking shit though

Also, ham fisted wheelying may have damaged your head bearings. May want that looked at.

My K5 600 gixxer does it too, no worries there it's just the discs
