i am confused to wether this is supposed to happen....

iv just put a liter of 2 stroke gearbox oil in me gearbox (obviously), but when i rode it, i looked in my mirror and there was a huge smoke screen behind me, i also noticed that when i went on the duel carriageway my bike wouldnt exceed 45Mph down the little hill, but before i could get something like 60-65Mph down that same little hill.

what the dam hell is going on ?

what exactly did it say on the oil bottle , I.E. brand ,type etc.
it sounds to me like you may have put 2 stroke oil (meant for your 2 stroke oil tank) into your engine/gearbox filler instead of proper engine oil
as far as i am aware you don't get specific 2 stroke gearbox oil it should just be your normal 10w40 going in there.

You can get bike gearbox oil, I assume some clever oil company has branded it as 2 stroke gearbox oil to get the kids to buy it. No need for anything other than normal 10W40 in a small road 2 stroke.

If you overfilled it you may have blown a crank seal, which would explain lots of oil burning and no power. A litre sounds like a fair amount too, depending on bike. I think my old NS125R had a gearbox oil capacity of about 700cc.

You can get 2 stroke gearbox oil.

What bike is it, I believe the RS250 took a liter or so, so would expect a bike with a top speed of 65 may well be a bit less.

As above, did you drain the old oil, did you check to see if it was the right level?

the gearbox capacity is 820cc (i didn't know this till i looked online on the specification)

i used motoil or how ever you spell it

i didn't drain it before but i knew that it had hardly any in there, as the gear changes there a bit clunky and it sometimes didn't want to change at all and needed a good stamp on the gear leaver.

i have since completely drained my gearbox, and re measured it in a jug, and it seems like i went and put 300cc too much in there, which was why it was spilling out onto my exhaust, rear tyre and rear break, do i now need new break pads in it ?

If my brake pads got soaked in oil I'd be replacing them. Degrease the whole area too.

if your lucky it was the oil spilling onto the exhaust that caused the smoke, if your unlucky the crank seals have blown which requires the bottom end being striped down to get the crank out so the seals can be replaced.


if its still smoking really badly and your losing gearbox oil the seals have denfanly gone.

To sort the brake pads n any affected areas use Muck off or Gunk whatever its called the degreaser stuff it comes in a metal orange tin n costs about £3 in wilkinsons, i would advise changing your brake pads altho if your strapped for cash you can degrease them but EXTREMELY cautios for around 50 miles or so..

dont forget to wipe the disc with degreaser too after every trip if you go with the cheaper yet more time consuming option
