Bolt roundedd off

Hi all 2 bolts holding my caliper onto my bike , anyway one came of with a lot of struggle and the other one just rounded off, i got mole grips to it , but still no look its chewed the teeth on my mole grips.

Is my only option now to drill it out?
if so , how do i do it just i drill straight in the centre of the bolt or at angles etc?

easiest way ive heard is to dremel a slit into itwide enough for a screw driver.

you could try tapping it around with a cold chizel and a club hammer, but be very carful beacause fork legs and calipers are easy to damage.

The best way to get it out is to drill the head off by drilling the centre of the bolt with a drill bit which is the same size as the bolt. ie if it's a 6mm bolt then use a 6mm bit. Once the head is drilled off drill right down the centre with the smallest drill bit you can. Keep drilling through it with slightly bigger drill bits each time untill you have almost drilled it out to the size of the bolt. If it's a 6mm bolt tap into it with a 6mm tap. This should grab what's left and break it up without damaging the thread.

If you drill the head off the bolt, the calliper should come off (with the stump still in the calliper). It should unscrew fairly easily once the tension is off it.

Good luck getting new bolts, they are usually fine pitch metric.

As a last resort you could trying hammering a socket of a size slightly smaller than the bolt on to the remnants, then try and turn it out with a socket wrench in the socket.

Take care not to damage the forks (brace them if possible).

Experience has taught me that a sharp punch or chiesal tapped gently with a hammer gets most turning and out! Much better to try that first before drilling!

mongrel - thats why i do,, works most of the time...

if not get angle grinder out n just grind away the bits at the side,, ie forks an caliper,,, the bolt shoudl fall away with eas...
