My bike was written off but I am planning on buying another soon. I've got a feeling that the new bike will cost more to insure than my old bike. The policy on my old bike doesn't run out until May next year.

Can I swap the existing policy onto the new bike and pay any extra, or because I've made a claim would I have to take out a new policy?

Cheers

Your policy has ended mate.

As soon as you made a claim. Smile

That's usually the way it goes. I guess it depends on who it goes through though or who was to blame.

If it wasn't you, then yes, you can change vehicle most of the times (depends on company) but you will usually pay a minimum £20 admin fee.

Was going say, from previous posts it didn't sound like it was his fault, so he should be in a position as if he hadn't claimed at all, so I think he'll be able to continue with it?

Keep us posted mate! Smile

your policy is normally a 12 month contract. you could make 365 claims in a year (one a day! even more) and they'd still have to honour the contract till it expired. at no point can they terminate a contract unless you were dishonest (undisclosed conviction for example)

in short yes you can swap the bike, provided they can cover you on the new bike, but yes there will probably be an admin charge.

I'm insured with Motorcycle Direct, there is a specific line in the contract that states, in the event of a claim the policy (e.g. where they've had to pay out) will be terminated.

Joe, you may need to check that out with your insurers that this is not the case.

I was insured with motorcycle direct last year and made a claim following my accident. I was still able to swap the policy onto my new bike despite the claim being unresolved.

If its written off and you claim on your own insurance they pay out and cancel the policy ( you have to send in policy docs, MOT and V5) so you would need to take out a new policy.

If you claim off a third party then you just amend details pay admin fee and any additional permium due on new bike.

Not to sure if you claim off your insurance for repair work think the policy still runs until expirey date Confused
