how do moters determine if your brakes are good enough?

I like to have squishy brakes but does it have to be rock hard for the mot? how do they test the pressure? can I test them myself somehow before taking it? If it wont pass as they are ill just have to let some more air out bleeding them again. Your lights dont have to be aligned or anything silly like that like on a car does it? can I do that myself?

I thought with cars if the brakes work it passes but ive heard people with bikes saying that they've failed on the brakes working but not applying enough force to the disc. I like it like that though, if I want to stop really quick to avoid a child running out i'll jump off the bike waving my hands in the air screaming in hysterics.

They need to lock the wheel so that when applied you can push the bike and the wheel skids.
If you have to pull the lever almost to the bars to do this it won't do.
It should feel reasonably firm, have a look at the pads, if they're well worn will need changing - not too expensive for most bikes.

They test them on a rolling road brake tester. It does some sort of calculation using the weight pushing down on the road and the stopping force.

The test is wierd though, patently useless brakes can test up very well and apparently good ones can fail.

I would suggest that if your brakes are not as good as they should be, it would be a good idea to fix them eh?

I have bikes with crap brakes, but they work as well as they were designed to.

They are supposed to test the headlamp alignment. In my experience, they don't usually bother because they know you'll just adjust it back to how you had it before.

you have a cx mate, they dont have brakes,,
braided hoses help a bit
its cos you have single piston brakes on a small smooth disk,
also your headlight is crap,
they will check everything at the mot station and avise you what to do anyway

Braided hoses, new fluid and new pads, they are "ok" (amazeing after a year on a cg)

Bear in mind th e hoses are probably original 20year olduns, so they will distort a fair bit! been promiseing my bike some for some time!)

I've got braided hoses, new oil and new pads. I just left some air in the system so it's how I like it, i'll have to do it propperly for the mot by the sounds of it. I have 2 fog lamps either side of the bike to help the headlight out abit.

where did i say they dont work? just abit spongier than what most people would be used to requiring pulling in abit more but they work fine like said. They will be too close to the handlebar (cheers doggone) when the lever is pulled in so will need changing.
