My aerox 50cc water cooled scooter has a problem. When the lights are on, the intermitantley dim and then burn brightly , as the engine is revved, they brighten, then dim to nothing, for a few seconds, then pick up again etc. Also the back light bulb keeps blowing, and not just failing, but it makes a hole in the side of the glass, when it goes!
Can the magneto be playing up? could this be putting out an irregular voltage? Otherwise is there a voltage regulator on the bike somewhere, as it seems that the lights are not getting a steady voltage.

I have checked as best I can and there doesn't appear to be any loose wires in the headlight unit.

Any ideas anyone?

moped lights are suppose to dim out when there not being revved then it brighten up again when you rev it

you could have a weak battery and will need replacing

OR

could be a damage voltage regulator, but they ae rock solid and are not prone to break down

Confused

Thanks, but the lights dim and brighten when the revs are held at say 3000, also the back bulb has blown 3 times, each time the glas has a hole blown in it, as if the volts are to high/

Any more ideas

nowt to do with the regulator that is only for charging the batt. av a look under front panel and look for 1 or 2 oblong white ceramic tubes these are ballest resistors and that is where you problem lies. make sure that the connections are good as they get corrosion on them causing the fault

I've look under the front panel but couldn't see anything. I also look under the speedo and between the handel bars and couldn't find anything. Next to the seat there is a box with wires going to it but I think it's the CDi box. There arer also 2 other bowes near the battery. Do you know what these are?

what you are looking for will be about 2" long and about 1/4-1/2" wide rectangular either metel cased or white ceramic these are the balast resistors that dump the excess voltage so 1 of them is either u/s or wiring slack. they are always bolted to the frame to keep them cool.

It appears that the nitro I have, has a combined voltage reg and ballast res, being a small metasl box with fins on it for cooling. I have changed it for a second hand item, and now the lights will run at half revs for two or three minutes, then I lose all lights including the dash lights. If I then turn the bike off, and restart the lights come on again!
Could the seciond hand part be at fault, or do I now have a seperate problem?
Any thoughts?

Thanks
