I see all these "super" petrols at the station, and wondered if they really make as much difference as they say.

Did it make it better or worse, and does the fact that its 2 or 4 stroke make much difference to the level in gain/drop in performance?

Is it worth it? I never used it, can I afford that extra quid Razz

They have addatives in, like detergant, to help clean your engine. Some also have a higher octane rating.

Are they worth it? Depends how high performance your bike is. I'm not talking basic power commender, can and K&N. Wink

Never noticed any peformance gain, although the bike may have gone a little further for the same amount of fuel. Not worth it IMO.

Not all the benefits are designed to be short term. Supposed to help your engine go longer and be more effecient long term. (I used to work for Texaco, and asked a engineer about it. Smile

I occasionally use it when I'm feeling generous. It doesn't seem to give any more power, but the throttle reponse seems a bit crisper.

I put a full tank in typhoon oncve becuase there were no other petrol station around, and the bike was slow and sluggish with that in there. (typhoons are designed to run on no-0more then 98ron, evan with a 70 bore)

But on bigger bikes they should do something good Laughing

On the hornet, I got 98 miles to a tank as standard, one time putting that stuff in, I switched to reserve at 120 miles.

I went 1/5 further!

Not that I buy it anyway, that was a one off. Tank range on a hornet is a big problem so I had to do something!

A higher detergent and/or octane rating is not necessarily a promise of a boost in power. The purpose of the additives, such as Chevron's Techron and Shell's Propower are obviously to keep your engine running clean by cutting down on sludge build-up. The higher octane level usually serves only to reduce the possibility of 'detonation', which leads to knock, which is bad. The only gain you might expect from so-called premium fuels might be a smoother powerband due to a lack of the knock sensor (should your bike even have one) cutting in and retarding timing when it senses detonation, often felt as a low spot in the powerband.

They have a higher octane rating (97 RON instead of 95) and some more detergent.

The octane rating won't matter unless your engine is set up for it, which means either significantly higher compression ration or forced induction.
The detergent will make a difference over a long period of time. A single tank now and then will not clean everything out. Using the expensive stuff for a few months would.

Personally I use it in my car, because my car specifies 98 octane. I often chuck it in the bike too, on based on the idea that the bike is used very infrequently and if I'm starting with 97 octane it will take longer to degrade to 91 (most jap bikes need 91 or higher) than something starting at 95.

i run my zxr750h2 on super unleaded, it seems to tick over better and has less of a flat spot, but it makes no difference to my fzr1000 exup incidently the exup is basically standard where as the zxr is modified

they did a feature in ride mag

average performance gain 1-2%

decreased fuel consumation and lower emissions

I use it all the time for the extra cost, less than £1 extra for a fill you may aswell

But soon got rid of the stuff and never put it back in.

I use BP's version... Ultimate Unleaded...
I have a CBR600RR and at first I just used regular fuel... then I was at the petrol station one night and the only available pump was the ultimate unleaded... thought I would give it a try and it worked out about £2 more expensive than normal...
Didn't notice much diff but read up about it and it says that putting it in once a month or once every two months won't give any benefits... so now its all I put in and I have noticed a big difference.. it feels smoother on acceleration, sounds nicer and kinda gives me a warm feeling knowing its cleaning the engine out.. Thumbs Up

Yes they do work, I use Esso supreme from time to time, gives me quite a few more miles per gallon.

What these fuels do is restore the MPG you should be really getting, cleans your carb, some performance differences like throttle responce.

OH BTW, Texaco petrol is crap, my bikes run like a dog using standard unleaded and my MPG suffers really badly, takes 2 tanks of Esso supreme to get it running better.

its a marketing ploy. with commodities such as sugar and petrol people buy on price but with branded products, ppl buy into a name they trust and so pay extra and feel good about it.

Its possible that there are real benefits to justify this marketing ploy, but its still a marketing ploy as I'm sure the additives cost next to nothing to make and they could put them in all petrol if they wanted to.
