Well after not doing anything for a very long time i pulled my finger out and went on a £200 ebay spending spree Laughing and got a few more bits for the beast to be.... among these New Rear shock, CBR600f Switchgear (miles nicer than the orignal crap), new ignition barrel (well off a GPZ900 but with one wire mod it does the job and looks a million times tidier than my orignal.... Some stainless bolts which i need a hell of a lot more as i forgot how many rusted bolts it had Embarassed ... and some nicer looking bars...

This pic shows the orignal bars n look of the dash and how fugly the switch gear is...
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/Satans-Helper/DSCN0285.jpg

And voilla a vast improvement

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/Satans-Helper/Image019.jpghttps://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/Satans-Helper/Image022.jpg
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/Satans-Helper/Image020.jpghttps://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/Satans-Helper/Image024.jpg

And its nice shiney new rear shock (at a bargain price)

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/Satans-Helper/Image018.jpghttps://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/Satans-Helper/Image011.jpg

O yeah and a overall view of my improved coucnil rented garage which now his electricity, lights, heating and power tool use facility via a 5HP generator (it even works a kettle Cool ) The pic was taken with the door pulled down so u can see how much light i get from 2 £6.99 500W flood lights

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v143/Satans-Helper/Image009.jpg Smile

Just need to get some brakes sorted (still), a exhaust but i have ideas for that... New front master cylinder (hopefully a SRAD600 cos i like the idea of a remote resevoir), a lot of wiring to mate the new switchgear to the old wiring... front bikini fairing or headlight i have yet to decide... and the rear end is gonna have some major cosmetic overhaulling... bit like industrial lyposuction to lose its overly massive fat rear end.

n some more shit but i forgot what Cool Laughing

I'm too thick (when it comes to bikes) to understand what's going on there, but it looks very impressive, and the garage sounds pretty ace!

I hope you have a decent lock on it, to keep the scum-bags out?

Are you going to replace those clocks? It might just be me, but they are a little garish - maybe a nice overlay inside them or something?

Im keeping the clocks but changing the faces of them as those clocks suit the bike and fit nicely Cool im trying to do as much of the work as possibly by myself as i have set a £1000 budget overall... i need to totalise to make sure im still on track but im having good fun while doing it..

as for security i have a TDR250 also parked in that garage (sideways at the end) and a chain goes through the big generator, the TDR, the GPZ and some other random objects i have plus i have a alarm in there too.... and luckily for me there is a old lady who lives over the road from my garage that at the slightest sound looks out the curtains and calls the police on any suspicious looking person loitering about Cool i got her a big bottle of sherry to say thankyou as she saved my bikes 2 times for me now.... hence the alarm and various other security i have

You decided what sort of lights you are getting?

I reckon a big f-off rectangular one right in the middle would be in keeping with the styling. Or one of those double rectangular 'looney light' jobs.

i got a big round one which looks ok... but is not quite the GPZ look...

The twin rectangular looney lights sound cool but i dont think they look big enough to suit the bike.... i have the orignal jumbo light and front mounting bracket with some chopping and reshaping to lose the fairing founts that might suit quite well...

guess i need a grinder to start masacaring the frame now Laughing

i really need people with spare ones to loan them to me so i can put them up against the bike n see what suits...but thinking realistically that wont happen.. guess i can just buy ones i think might then resell if they look pants...

What about one out of a car? The big rectangular Hella ones boy racers fitted to their Audi quattros and Montegos back in the 80s.

Bet you'd get one for next to nothing fron a car breakers.

I'm a big fan of a big round chrome headlight, it always look neat and clean and fits in with the naked steel frame idea.

Please not twin spots. Every bandit on the planet has them now, you get a unique individual bandit by keeping the original headlight.

Big square one might just look a bit, well, shit.

I was just wondering if you found any modern brakes that will fit straight on or if you are going to get a bracket made up.

I ask because I used to have a couple of GPz550's and the only thing that really let them down was the god awful brakes. When I get a bit of time and money and I want to restore a GPz550 but only when I can get appropriate brakes for it.

PS. when I was looking into getting a bracket made up for a modern calliper, I was warned that modern callipers may very well bend the forks, no idea if there is any truth to that.

Good luck with the project Thumbs Up

Problem with getting the brakes modded is that the Fork legs actually need machining because to take 4pot calipers you need spacers on... luckily i scored some spacers for next to nothing but the machining work and mounting brackets cost would put me well over budget and there is the risk of the forks fekking up...

So ive ditched the anti dive as planned... put in progressive springs and a heavier oil to suit my riding style and im gonna try n source some STD calipers and use them with braided lines and a SRAD 600 master cylinder Wink should make an immense improvement and keep my costs down...

IF ANY ONE HAS SOME UNITRACK FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS THEY DONT WANT PLEASE GIVE ME A SHOUT Cool

If you can get hold of Demonic69 he might be able to help you, afaik he has 3-4 GPz550's, haven’t seen him online in ages though.

I've got a lot of respect for guys (and girls) with the will and ability to stick to a project like this. I think with my next bike it'll be something I'll be aiming for, to build up some mechanical knowledge to make it possible.

Good work Thumbs Up
You're right about the switch gear, for a second I thought I was looking at a GT550/750 there (same gear) Rolling Eyes

I'm now interested in the end result. Please post more pics as you go.
Ta Very Happy

Used to belong to a mailing list concerning street stock racing for the GPZ750, attached is a text file concerning alot of the basic mods. May be no use at all, may be helpful. See what you make of it Wink

For the record, I went with the dual rectangular "looney light" inside an AR125 nose cone on the front of mine, looked OK. Then again it had stopped looking even remotely "stock" by then.

Just bear in mind, you're on a slippery slope. One minute I was looking for bigger wheels next thing I new I was fitting new running gear. Then again, first lesson of serious tweaking. If uprating the engine make damn sure your brakes and rubber will cope with it Confused

Well i got all the switches wired up eventually.... fekking kawasaki wires had self destructed so had to rebuild half the loom , Fixed the fuel guage display thingy and other idiot lights.... just need to sort the oil sensor and the "Warning" light n thats the electrical stuff all sorted ...

And it runs again only for a few seconds cos with only a set of downpipes on the neighbours may have not liked it too much...

Next mission find a mito seat or get hold of a R1 trackday/Race tail piece n use that (some time after payday tho)

next set of pics will be early january as i should have the rearsets, front lights and exhaust sorted by then.... the rear end is on hold til i source some bodywork(or a seat) that i like Cool

I know you've done the headlight but have you thought about a light off a classic car?

Or something like it.

Don't know if this would fit in with your styling plans but the rectangular one on my GPX750 works really well with an uprated bulb, and I'd guess all the connections would be the same.
