PostPosted: 18:44 - 01 Dec 2005    Post subject: nsr stalls in 1st on take-off?? Reply with quote

hi all, small problem, my nsr stalls alot in 1st gear when i start to move, now i have only been using it the last 2 days, so might be having to get used to it, it was used before me, as i have just bought it.
Not sure if this is a problem for other users of the nsr.
Also, the speedometer does not work, the cable is of at the wheel end, just not sure where it goes, as there seems to be no space for it to go.
Any help would be appreciated. Thumbs Up
Baz.

Did you speedo work before this problem started?

Do you have petrol in your bike?

Stu Thumbs Up

hello again mate, well its the first time i went out on it yesterday, and i only bought it a couple of weeks ago, so it probably was like it but i didn't notice it. there's a little metal bit on the end like a probe with a slit on it, it can be moved in and out as if its broken at the other end also, but wanted to get a new cable and do it myself, but not sure where it goes on the wheel if it does go there??
Thanks bud,
Baz.

hi, sorry, this topic has 2 seperate problems.
1. the speedo has not worked since i have had it, and i have just noticed a free cable that has come off at the front wheel( presumably the speedo cable), but not sure where it goes on the wheel.

2. the bike stalls when i take off, twice today i had to pull it over 2 one side of the road as i was in the middle of it, it might be that i'm not used to it yet, but suely shouldn't happen.
Thanks stu,
Baz. Laughing

Erm..... Ive never actualy touched my speedo at any time of having a bike, so i dont have a clue about that. If sombody doesnt know on here then take it to a sparky and get them to have a examination on it, should cost you much.

As for it stalling on first take of i wouldnt know unless i seen or experienced the problem, sorry. But another question.

Does it stall wen your just sitting normal at lights for example?

And also have you left your choke on by any chance?

Stu Thumbs Up

The speedo cable should run from the back or side of the speedo unit down through the front fairing to a point near the wheel axle.

The slit thing spins as the wheel turns, this spins a drive in the back of your speedo unit giving you a reading.

If both ends are connected correctly it may be that its broken inside. In which case you need a new cable. Not usually expensive. Thumbs Up

I dont know NSR's but a educated guess says its very close to the front axle. If the speedo sits on the left, the connector will prob be on the left too or vice versa.
On my FZR the cable connects at the bottom of the left fork at the rearmost part of the fork. Maybe there?

I think your bike may be idling a little too slowly if you are having to give it a fair few revs to get going try turning the idle screw inwards maybe half a turn on the carb slider body, or this can be done on the throttle cable, there should be an adjusting break in the outer cable this can be unscrewed to tighten the throttle cable Thumbs Up.
As for the speedo cable as many people have already said there will be a small hole near the front left fork inbetween the wheel and fork leg where the cable slides into and slots into the gearing inside Thumbs Up.
Let us know how it goes mate, Dan

the pilot screw is 2 1/2 turns out (after screwing completly) , then the throttle screw must be set at 1400 rpm +-100 after engine warming (when your temperature has gone over the blue zone and 2mm inside the white zone) . but before adjustment , you must clean tank tap , carb and air foam filter as shown in the manual . then when finish put a new plug BR9EIX

well done the pilot screw and everything else, went out on it today, and the same thing, even give it more revs and it still stalls, especially on a hill, on take of mainly.
the choke was off, had fuel in tank...
today it cut out and had to walk it home almost, tried it again after about 30 min, and got it going and managed to get home.
does anyone think the carb is full of crap and needs a good clean??
Or a good service.
Thanks people,
Baz. Thumbs Up

this is the most important and by the way check carbonization at the exit of the barrel .

it will takes about 2hours if you do anything suggested . it's not difficult , it requires order & application .
download my file https://www.geneva-racing.com/~alains/NSRtips.doc (1Mo) in this file taking off the carb is detailed
the manual is here : https://www.geneva-racing.com/~alains/NSRmanualDOC.zip (64Mo)
good job ! and by the way check how many notches has your needle (should be 4 or 5) and set it on the second notch from the top (you may set it on the third notch if your needle has 5)

ive had the same problem with the bike stalling
mines is a 2 stroke..
but after ive had the bike running for 30mins it doesnt cut out.
i think its mainly to do with the bike being a cold start..

no , i think it's because you run too lean . check your plug , the best colour is chocolate ! if it's clearer , you are lean . upjet your carb

well, i went to tesco to fill her up, when i went to start it, it didn't want to start again, tried for about 20 min, and eventually it did, now the engine was warmed up, surely it should have started ok. but i am awaiting to hear from someone who can upjet the carb and clean it out. its not too bad starting in the morning now.
But i did get a new spark plug the other week, it was a BR9EIX which is supposed to be the best this time of year.
Thanks Alain. Thumbs Up

Another question, i have a cap for the gearbox, a cap for the 2 stroke, a cap for the coolant, now do i have to fill up the cap for the radiator aswell, as this also has a cap, but its not easy to get to.
Baz. Very Happy
