Take it off and clean it with a toothbrush and WD40/ paraffin. A wire brush can be useful for rust on the outside. Old engine oil is always useful stuff for lubing, just it gets flung off pretty quickly.

Cables want 3 in 1 spray lube, switches want WD40, electrical contacts want some emery paper/ wire wool and then vaseline (not grease).

Seat and sidepanel off, unscrew/ unbolt the negative terminal first, then the positive. There's a strap to hold it in. Touching the terminals/ frame is fine, so long as you don't let anything bridge them (including your hand) and short it out. Avoid removing the positive before the neutral, or you'll short it out through the frame if you're not careful.
When putting the battery back in, attach the positive first, then the neutral.
