ok, so let me set the scene. ive gotten ready for work, and im out the door and on the road by 5:15pm. im working from 6pm till midnight, but traffic is a nightmare, even on a bike. i make bloody good pace along the A14, despite never going over 80mph, ive found out that cars drive slower during winter. so i get into cambridge in about 15 mins, give or take, and i start passing cars that are stuck in the cues, making brilliant time again. i reach the roundabout at newmarket and east, and go straight. i come off the roundabout, and approach a crossing, the lights are changing, so i slow down.

ok, now comes the fun part.

front brake on, the front wheel locks and the front washes out. i go down to the right, and as you do, i try and put my foot down. now because of the angle, my toe makes contact first.

now the nasty part.

for some reason, im looking down at my right foot. and i see that as i come down, it gets twisted 180 degrees, so im facing forward, and my foot is backwards. so much for boots. as the rest of me comes down, and i hit the floor and roll away from the bike my foot springs back to normal.

i quickly pull myself away from the road, and bike, and a searing pain goes through my leg and knee.

im half laying there, pointing at my leg, and the people on the cross walk, maybe 10 foot away, just stand there and look. the car next to me, the bird in it just looks with the door sorta half cracked. im in the busiest part of cambridge, on one of the busiest roads, and no one comes to help for maybe a minuite. its until i point at my leg and make a brakign motion, that some one come over to me.

police come, ambulance, etc, and i get breathalised etc statement, all the formalities. 2 1/2 hour later, im picked up at the hospital, with apparently no damage, but my knee is screwed and i cant put any weight on it. at all.

so seeing as my bike is parked on a central divide at a cross walk in the middle of cambridge on a friday night, i try an get it moved. so we call the rac.

after loads of time and stuff, and many 'itll be 30 mins','itll be 20 mins max',sorry sir, just another 15 mins.

4 hours later, my bike gets picked up and im taken home by my dad.

time i crashed, approx 5:40pm
time i get home, approx 00:15am
searing pain and being the centre of attention, not to mention little ol me, holding up almost all traffic in cambridge : priceless

some thins you cant buy, for others
DONT USE RA BLOODY C

needless to say i cant walk, work, bend my knee. so im a happy bunny.

and i have a blob, so much as a leg now

Sounds nasty, glad your ok. Its probably shock with the people around you, i dont think if i had seen a biker come off infront of me a couple of years ago i would have had a clue about what to do. Right enough in a street packed with people thats just frackin rediculous. Is there anything seriously wrong with your leg or have you ripped tendons etc.? But most importantly your still here to tell tell the tale. Did you get a gander at the bike? Do you think there was much damage?

Get well soon! Thumbs Up Karma

yeeeouch! at least because you're injured you don't risk binning your bike a 2nd time over winter Razz

If i'd seen you bin it, i wouldn't have stood there like a pillock wondering what to do, some people just have no sense at all. The chances of me being in cambridge at that time are somewhat remote, though...

Shocked Can't believe there's virtually no damage, I would have said it was an expensive fix if I didn't know better! Laughing

Unlucky though, people are dropping like flies at the moment, it's just this bloody weather!! Evil or Very Mad

Get well soon.. Smile Thumbs Up

There are no ligaments in the back of the knee.

'IF' you have torn the ligaments in the middle of the knee i.e. the ACL and PCL you are looking at at least 6 months off the bike and at least 2 operations to repair them and that assumes you haven't damaged the LCL or MCL ligaments.

Been there and had 26 months off any work and a further 24 months until I could work fulltime.

Glad to hear your ok. Thumbs Up

Why is it that everyone seems to be loosing the front end all the time, just from pulling the brake too hard, and not even leaning over!?

The last 4 or 5 crashes I've read about on here are from locking up the front while riding in a straight line. Is this just down to inexperience I wander?

Confused

Thumbs Up

dunno, im by no means an expert, but ive ridden thruogh 4-5 winters, and this, from what i can remember, is the slippiest so far. the people i ride with in the area have said that at the mo, cambridge is very slick to ride in, and i start work at 6 pm, so when its getting cold.

may be inexperiance, but i think it had more to do with the conditions, and the general hazards of winter riding.

When I had my off in the middle of rush hour I did get plenty of attention because A: the bike was on its side blocking both lanes so no one could get past and B: the people who saw it happen thought I would be in an awful lot worse nick than I turned out to be.

Going head first into the back of a boy racer who hit another car also went some way to getting folks attention.

Make a big deal out of it in the future, then be a hero, stand up and walk away Cool
