When I was 16 I decided to wait until I was 17, then regretted it.

I would go for a /cheap/ dt50 or similar trail style bike.
The main thing I would say is to try and keep it cheap, you won't get quite the performance you get from a sports style bike, but you should have more money left over when you're 17 to buy a decent bike - a 50cc is never going to be that fast anyway.

Up to you, can you afford to get rid of 50cc after a year?

If you were 17, I would recommend, getting a 2nd hand bike like a CG for 6 or 7 hundred. Learning on that, passing, selling the cg and getting somet like a restricted 400.

It also depends on what your earning, if your still at school, its alot to afford, unless you have part time job etc.

Up to you, plus your previous experience with bikes.

I had enough money to get a scooter at 16, but decided to wait until I was 17 to get a 125 - at that time I could cycle to and from college at the same speed as a 30mph scooter (and I'm a law obiding type so wouldn't have had one derestricted). I wouldn't say I missed anything because of my wait, but then again I've never done the 50cc thing so wouldn't know what I was missing.

Took and passed all my tests 7 weeks after passing my CBT (no lessons, just thought I'd give the tests a go to get them done with). Got a '78 400/4 5 weeks after which I used/restored for 2 years whilst on my 33bhp licence, got a Bandit for 2 more years for the 60 mile-a-day commute to Uni, then another 400, another, then another 400 until finally, after 6 years of riding got me my Blade.

Sorry about the life story, got a bit carried away there..... Confused

well it depends upon what type of bike you like, i have a Rieju RS2 Matrix, it is the most good looking 50cc bike i have ever seen, its said to be the fastest aswell, ounce you have fitted an exhaust and done the carb, i love it, i can currently got about 70Mph with my Endy Deo Exhaust system, and i kill neer enough all 50cc's off the line and on top speed.
the choice is yours, there are loads out there.

Thumbs Up

PM me if you want any more help, bike wise, but just dont get a twist and go Evil or Very Mad

Are you the Speedfreak who is the current whipping boy at Bikersweb?

If so *waves hello* xx

Be gentle with him, BCF'ers. We've given him a hard time over at the Other Place, and he seems to have taken it reasonably well.

Bless.

LOL

If you can afford it get an R1! Twisted Evil

But then you might end up killing yourself Rolling Eyes so if you have the money id recommend you get an Aprilla RS125 when your 17 but when you turn 16 get a moped so you gain experience in that year of ridding on public roads!

Thumbs Up

i had a ped a 16 and spent a bit to much on it really, then brought as fairly expensive RS125 when i was 17, this all came out of my pocket and had to work a lot to get these but i dont regreat it at all!

i know if i had a really cheap 50cc then a rubbish 125cc i would have loads of money to get my bigger bike with now but i much rather have to bikes i enjoyed and made me want to get my full lisence, i even spent £600+ on a rebulild for the RS then the top eng went and every around me were saying "bet i wish you hadnt of brought it" or "why you go for such a fast one, now you regreat it" but i didnt at all, yea i took about 1 1/2 wages just on it but i got it back on road and loved it even more!!!

Go for a 50cc i say and i had a twist and go and though it was great, loads of people on here say get geared 50cc but i dont think it matters.
