arghhh, following on from my previous topic about cheap vs branded batteries I decided to buy a branded one, apparantly Varta, but I got sent an Exide one instead. Not necessarily a major problem other than despite it having the same model number YTX12-BS (although this is labelled ETX12-BS for Exide) it is 12Ah rather than 10Ah. Does this make a difference, I'm guessing it does but just wanted to make sure before I go through the hassle of having to send it back.

Its basicly a larger capacity battery, If it fits it will be better Very Happy 1A load on 10Ah will last 10hours approx, so 1A load on 12Ah will last 12hours approx.

12Ah is better than 10Ah, as mattish said.

A 10Ah battery is more than sufficient as it is for a bike that is working correctly, 12Ah just means that when your bike won't start, you can try to start it for longer. Wink

The part number you gave "YTX12-BS " is for a 12Ah battery anyway if my memory serves me correctly. Had they sent you the exact Varta one, it would also have been 12Ah. This is what the '12' in the number referrs to.

The letters referr to the size, the number is the Ah rating and the two following letters are the orientation and type of the terminals.

If it was a 6v battery there would be a '6' in front of the number so for example a CG125 would take a 6n6-3b which is a 6v, 6Ah battery.

According the the specs from the site I quoted in the other thread:

Manufacturer: VARTA/YUASA
Type: YTX12-BS
Voltage: 12v
Capacity: 10Ah
Dimensions: 150mm x 87mm x 130mm
Weight: 3.4Kg

(The YTX14-BS has 12Ah)

So it looks like he did get a more expensive heavier duty battery - although it may also be slightly bigger and heavier.

I had a quick look on the Yuasa site but didn't see it in the few mintues I had available.

Well that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and flys in the face of having a reasonably standardised numbering system for motorcycle batteries. Confused

I think thats just an error in their product description, that part code should be 12Ah as stink has suggested.

Or maybe not as the case may be Confused

specs from yuasa site

Battery Family: Maintenance Free
Battery Type: YTX12-BS

Voltage: 12
Capacity: 10
Dimensions: 6" x 3.4375" x 5.125"
Weight: 7.5 lbs.
Metric Dimensions: 150mm x 87mm x 130mm
Metric Weight: 3.4 kg
Polarity:
Acid Volume: 0.6
Amps: 1.2
C.C.A.: 180

I'm assuming the capacity is the 10Ah bit, my existing battery is a Rob Hunter battery YTX12-BS and it's 10Ah and I've seen many Yuasa or Varta batteries on many sites that say YTX12-BS is 10Ah.

anyway, sounds like the battery I've got is not a problem, it's about 4mm taller than the other one but I'm sure it'll fit.
