Sheared a bolt off while changing the oil filter. There's still another 4 left. Is that enough until next change?

Serves me right for being all "I never use torque wrenches."

never heard of an oil filter with bolts on.

All of mine have been spin on type oil filters...

How can changing an oil filter shear a bolt off? Is it like a sump pan type filter?

It doesn't leak but then it is just on tick over. I was worried that for hard use it would be put under pressure.

It's a paper style filter and has a housing that bolts under the engine.
Strange I thought as well.

Oil pressure does increase with engine revs... so it might be ok on idle but once its hot (oil gets thinner) it might leak out with nasty consequences. Is it sheared flush ?

If it was daylight and you were only going on a short trip l would say risk it and have a look under the bike at every traffic light stop to make sure it was,nt pissing out.

l once rode a CB400N with a leaking base gasket (pissing out with oil) 60 miles with no problems (apart from oil all up my left leg). Laughing

Get a sharp 3 - 4mm drill and drill the stump dead centre (use another bolt to gauge the depth to go) then slowly increase the drill size until you get to the size of the inner diameter of the threads where you will just start to reveal the threads in the ally. From there if your lucky you should be able to pick out the remaining thread and put a new bolt in. Takes ages to do but tis possible with patience and decent sharp drill bits.

Did it on a brake caliper on an old porker 968 when I sheared a bleed nipple off flush with the casting.

Otherwise take it for a run locally and give it some beans to see how she behaves under load, you'll probably find it'll be OK if you haven't over torqued the other three and twisted the plate.
