Can't figure out how they work. 4 pads or 2 pads?
Doh!

Its an old system, 8-9 years old.

Saw it years ago and the consensus was no improvement over a conventional system but extra weight.

They keep more of the weight towards the centre of the wheel which is a good thing. I'm sure i've seen them on a few endurance bikes.

Not really I'm afraid.

In total both discs have around half the circumference of a single radial disc which can be made to have a smaller swept area so having less mass and yet still retain a larger overall braking surface. Add in the fact that using a radial disc means you can use a thinner spoked, lighter wheel as there are no radial loads and any advantage soon disappears.

Then add in the point of greater mechanical advantage and you can have an even thinner swept area yet still retain greater braking ability.

Then remember that the heat from the disc is transferred into the rim and not the hub so bearings can be thinner as can the walls of the hub so saving even more unsprung weight.

As a radial disc will have a huge surface area it will also dissipate heat quicker so can be made thinner saving yet more weight.

I'll probably think of some more reasons later but you get the idea.

You can have as many discs as you like with a wet multi-disc arrangment, commonly used in tractors etc. For a small radius you can pack in loads of discs and use the self-servo effect to ramp the braking torque right up.

those who think radial brakes are a fad are mistaken.

Radial calipers flex less than standard calipers which results in fade because some of the pots lift up and away from the rotors.

Radial calipers have been proven to stop up to 2 bikes lengths better than the old system. a small increase but definate one that is still a major benefit to racers and road users if they are used properly.

Folks seem to be confused between "radial mounted discs" and "radially mounted calipers". The two are completely different things.

Radially mounted discs (one extremely large disc arouned the edge of the wheel) may or may not be a passing fad; They certainly work though, reducing weight and increasing braking force.

agreed but how many people who buy a bike with radial calipers would be able to tell????

its the pb effect, i.e. its got radial calipers so it must be good

@ loply: reducing weight ie is in the aspect of the wheels can be lighten further than they are today as the force from braking are less harsh on the spokes. So the wheels can be weakened by lightening the wheel and also you only need one disc compared to the norm of two.

@gsxrmick: that may be true but they still an improving from the old and don't cost the manufacturers more money to produce/redesign which i think is the problem with radially mounted discs.

So if radially mounted discs are indeed superior, which I believe they are, then why aren't they fitted as standard to any mainstream bikes?

Because they're too much of a departure from conventional thinking. People need to see them fitted to MotoGP machines before they'll buy a sports bike with them on. For whatever reason, they aren't fitted to GP machines. I doubt money is really going to be an issue, but homologation rules and the question of whether they would really be good enough to work reliably under race conditions might be.

The weight saving in the wheel might not actually counter the increased weight of the rim-mounted disc. Using just a single disc and caliper (massively increased effective radius) might well improve that score though.
