Well, i've had a look out the window, and oh no. Snow. My worst enemy. Any tips for riding in this, its not too thick, but i am not looking forward to this one bit.
Please leave tips for other people that may be forced to ride in the snow here, could prove useful. (Anything other than 'Ride Slow' )
Thanks in advance.

Was thinking the same thing when i woke up this morning....but decided against riding in the snow. I have a car so it isnt too bad, but if you are going to ride in the snow just use your back brake and be very smooth with everything no sharp acceleration or the like. And put your feet down at much as you can just incase! Neutral And wear all your armour and crap because your probably 99% more likely to fall off in snow! Wink

Come on you pussies its not that bad. I did it the whole time it snowed last year and at one point was the only vehicle in the car park. Even the cars started to back off.

It's not too bad if you can get in a car track where the snow has melted but where i live it was all fresh so just drive with your feet down. Don't go over 25 and hover your feet above the ground if it slips then you can kick up and keep the bike upright. Thumbs Up

Well i just pussied out of riding my g/f into work this morning.

Dad offered a lift in the car and i accepted without contemplation.

Feel like a bit of a wimp now, but im sure my time will come. Going to pick her up from work to night on the condition that the roads havent all iced over.

But if it was only me that i had to ride, no pillion to worry about hurting, then i would do it, no worries.

Its times like this i wish i still had my little 50cc moto-x style bike. Would have been great today Thumbs Up

Have been caught out a few times by heavy snow showers over the moors - you can ride OK in it but obviously cornering is tricky.
On fresh snow it really is easier than you'd think, better than icy patches anyway.
Still much better to avoid it unless you have a light trail bike or some other lightweight bike you don't mind getting slightly bashed about.
If you do go down, at least the snow's cushioning combined with your low speed means any damage will be minor.

Got caught on the cat and fiddle once (in buxton there was nothing, got there and it was covered in the stuff) 50mile detour otherwise so pressed on, there wasn't much else on there and anything that was took it very easy, as T44TE M go 20 or so and you'll make it through, follow the clear tracks and stay on main roads..

New snow is fine, old compacted and then frozen snow is bad mkay! (but unlike ice you can see it easy, so there is that)

if you are unlucky like us Scots you get used to the snow, i will only ride if the roads are well gritted, stay in a high gear so you dont wheel spin, but as the guy says take the bus

I don't ride with my feet out - if you're bike tyres are going to slip, then your feet are as well, I was always told that it made no difference what so ever. Also, don't ride in wheel tracks where the compacted ice lays - best to stick in the middle of the lane and ride through fresh snow. Other than that, it's small, smooth movements and hang off the bike a little more than usual, even for tiny angles of lean.

You have to adapt the rideing depending on what kind of snow it is, if its new snow then your best off on the clear tracks, if its turned into sleety crap and then frozen then thats the last place you want to be...

Yeh useing the absoloute lest ammout of lean possible and rideing very very smoothly in higher gear as you can will help allot too..

Might sound obvious but choose a route thats main roads and as slow as possible!

Main thing to worry about on the road with snow is dickend drivers who think its august and are pelting arround full speed everywhere, be extra carefull of tailgaiters and if you need to pull over and let them kill themselfs at their own pace.

High gear, easy on throttle, don't use the brakes, mega slow round corners, feet down. You are going to fall off at some point, it will be a slow speed lowside onto snow and as such is unlikely to cause much damage, if you aren't prepared for this to happen to your bike, don't do it.

I've done it couple of times, It's not nice but keep it steady and slow, keep off the brakes and avoid corners where possible.

That's what I think, too - when I had to ride in the snow I kept my feet on the pegs - that way the back brake is covered should you need it, and the bike seems to feel more stable Smile

Think about it, if your feet are down and you need to stop quick, you've got to get your feet back onto the pegs, and more likely than not you'd panic and stamp the back brake, causing a skid. With your feet already there, you're a little more prepared.

Use a rat bike (C90) etc.

Off-roaders must be cool. Does riding a dirt bike in the snow feel much different to riding on mud/gravel?

Shocked I've eaten my words *chomp* officially.
Nice one! Shocked Thumbs Up .

Still don't think riding on the snowy road on metzeler track tyres is the best way to go though (go as in best way to proceed not as in slide out on the snow and suffer a fatal injury and die). Cool

ride very carefully. extend your breaking distances,
take your time in corners using your body to lean and keep the bike more upright, if it skips out you will be waiting for it,
dont go out if you dont have to in all honesty, its not very nice thinking you can die at any sec with a simple mistake.
