Hi Folks,
Thought I would stick this topic on here as I'm sure someone out there will understand! Sad

The thing is, I've wanted to do my DAS and get a "proper" bike for quite a while now. Well for starters, I had to wait a long time to actually get on the road with a 125 as I've got epilepsy, so that was frustrating enough. You have to go for a year without having any signs of epilepsy before you can even apply for a provisional, it took me about 7!!

Anyway, I'm gonna do my DAS in a few weeks and hope to then get a nice 600, and that's where the problem lies.

I'm married, and we've been wanting to get a dreaded mortgage for ages and it should be happening this year. To be honest, my priority is getting the bike but hers is getting the house. Obviously you have to be debt free to get a mortgage but if I get the bike, I'll be in more debt which means we can't get a mortgage. So she's pissed off that I want the bike so bad but she just can't understand that it means so much to me. I've wanted it for so long but it clashes with her plans and so she thinks I'm being selfish. I just want to fulfill my dream and I won't be happy til I get that 600!!! Crying or Very sad I hope all this makes sense and I'm getting my point across.

How do you compromise on a situation like this?

Any ideas?

Cheers Guys and Gals.

Get a cheaper bike?
An older and or smaller bike will still seem like a big jump up and should be fun for quite a while still.

Second vote for get a cheaper bike. You'll get a bike that will do pretty much everything for under £1000.

I was riding a GPZ500s for most of last year that cost me £850. Been all over the country on it.

Another vote for a cheaper bike. There are plenty of "nice 600's" around for a decent price.

Sorry to be dull but:

The wife and kids would have to be more important in this situation I feel.

two grand can be saved up for, getting a 10k bike would probably require a loan.

I suspect that you need to save up a deposit for the house, so what I would do is save up a couple of k more than I need, and then buy the house. Once I was settled, I'd break out my £2k and buy a bike. Nice and simple.

If you need the bike sooooo badly, then I'd even consider a part time job on top of my full time one. You can tell the missus its to help save up for household stuff/deposit saving etcetera.

Buying a house is a good investment, and much more likely to give you a good return on your money than a motorcycle! Smile

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Yes marjay, but to spend that much he'd have to be looking at buying something geigh, like a Triumph, and you know that'd be just, well, stoopid!! Wink Laughing

loans are cheaper when you are a homeowner
get the house first and do a few test rides so you will know what bike you like best

a 600 isnt much fun in this weather as if you use all the power when you are new to it, you will drop it

enjoy the 125, get the house, and by the time you get the 600 it will be nice enough weather to use it

a lot of people have 125's to ride in the winter instead of their big bike anyway.

Doesn't she agree to having cheaper mortage and enjoying hobby at the same time? Enjoying hobby is as important as having mortage. I'm 35 but still living in a dormitory and expend much on hobbys.

The moment you ride a new bike off the lot you have lost money.
Buy second hand. If you do buy a new bike get good insurance for possible accident!

I also suggest consulting a financial advisor, they would be able to assist you with plannng and managing your debt as apposed to income & current assets. It is important to know whether you can afford both mortgage and bike without getting in over your head and regretting it later.

It is my experience that there are many hidden costs/ expenditures when purchasing anything!

Good Luck!

i don't mean to sound harsh or anything but having epilepsy isn't going to help your situation, i don't know much about epilepsy but i imagine being on a 600 would trigger a fit due to fast movement, snapping your head round to do a life saver. it's down to you though, ignore this post if you want to.

Erm, since when? You have to be able to get a good credit score, but that doesn't necessarily mean debt free. In fact often having debt but showing you are reliable at paying it back can actually increase your credit score and make it easier to get further credit or your mortgage!

However, I agree with what the others have said. If you want a bike so much sell your little bike, sell your car possibly (unless you share it with your wife), get a part-time job and buy the cheapest you can find. Learn to maintain it yourself or make friends with someone who can teach you and/or help you too!

Make sure your wife realises how important it is to you. If you've been waiting 7 years for a bike because of the epilepsy I say you bloody well deserve one now. Do it while you're healthy and have got the cash there.
Once you have a mortgage, any spare cash you do have will be claimed by your wife for the never ending list of curtains, cushions, toilet mats, decorating and babies!
A motorbike will never compete on the list of priorities and you will be sat there choosing the second set of curtains in 10years time dreaming of what could have been.

You certainly do not have to be debt free to get a mortgage. I can't remember the last time I was debt free. Most people buy their car on some kind of credit - even if you're loaded you may as well take a 0% over 12 month deal as you can make interest on the capital until the car's paid off.

Anyway, as a compromise, when you get the mortgage, get a bit extra to pay for the bike as well. This will mean that you pay the bike off over 25 years so it will cost a lot[1] - but as long as you get a mortgage that will allow you to make overpayments, you can pay it back much earlier.

[1] Not acutally that bad given the low interest rates compared to a regular loan and the fact that inflation makes the real value of the repayment lower over time.

If she still moans, get a bit extra still to pay for a new kitchen/bathroom/curtains/whatever for her in the new house too.

Ah but they take any debts you have off of the total amount they can loan you for a mortgage. I can't see 2 grand making so much difference on the price of a house anyway.

Seven years of waiting and you haven't saved up enough for a cheap 600cc sports bike?

I'd vote buy a cheaper bike too, it's not like you'll be pushing it to the limits any time soon anyway. Something like a GPZ would probably do you for a year or two until you get other things sorted.

Thumbs Up

We all love bikes, no-one's debating that.

But in this situation putting a roof over your family's head is more important IMO.

But yes, you can get a lovely bike for under a grand. I got my '97 Bandit for £800. Does everything beautifully.
