I think the race can on my SV sounds fantastic. Turns out my neighbours don't agree Evil or Very Mad

When I came home tonight the guy over the road stopped me and told me I "really ought to get it fixed" and apparently some of the other neighbours have been talking about it as well.

What's the worst they can do if I tell 'em to get bent? They're not really the type to kick my bike over or slash the tyres, but could they get me an ASBO?

I don't want to give in and put the standard can back on but it's not worth f'king up my career over Sad

Pissed off right now Evil or Very Mad

Either put the standard can on or push it down the road before starting it.

Also make sure the bike is safely locked in the garage every night because as nice as they might seem, you never know Confused

No point in inflaming the situation as it will get you nowhere.

have a word with them and try and get them on your side instead of them bitching about it behind your back.
if they are really determined and the local council sees it as a real nuisence they could give you an ASBO, they seem to give them out like the dole at the moment! Rolling Eyes
worse comes to the worse try and be polite about it and warm the bike up up the road and if they still persist then you may have to put the standard can back on.
from a noise point of view you may have your bike running for 5 mins at 100-105 dB at one metre but over and hour the average will be much less than this (LAeq), and by certain standards will probibly not cause problems

[Sensible head on]

If your can isn't road legal why not get one that is? I know it is a compromise but you should still be able to get a respectable sound without being too loud?

A quick scan of Ebay suggests Road legal race can

If your illegal race can is annoying the neighbours to the extent that one of them was elected to pull you up about it, then change it for fuck sake. Rolling Eyes

And yes, I'm fairly sure they could just tell the police, and have you ASBO'ed or taken off the road or somesuch.

Aye, be considerate.

If it's still too loud to be able to push it down the road and start it up there (I used to do that with my er5) then just change the exhaust for one of those ones with a removeable baffle (remus revolution, it makes sense Wink)

Last thing you want is neighbours who all hate you. If one touches your bike, then you'll never sleep well again! You'll be paranoid.

you could look into getting a dB killer for when you start the bike up and take it out just as you leave or down the road Thumbs Up

If it's road legal, gently and persuasively instruct them to crawl up their own arses and die...

What about the poor bugger that lives down the road. Laughing

If you work unsociable hours then I guess theres no option but to play ball during the working week and use the can for fun at weekends.

Like the others said - get a road legal can etc. etc. Don't leave the bike idling for ages to warm up either, just start it and ride off sharpish.

Why are you pissed off at them? How would you like it if the next door chav was driving around with his twelveteen-million amp sub blaring? Would you ask him to keep it down?

ive had al sorts of problems with my neighbours, one threatend my dad over it (to mcuh of a pussy to treaten me) and that was a RS with a STANDARD road legal can,

EDIT: here the thread i did about it, might help Thumbs Up
https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=64845&highlight=exhaust

now i got a SV with a scorpion race can and well, didnt go down to well really Rolling Eyes i roll it into road with engine off as slightly downhill so dont have to push it or anything, start it down the side of my house and ride it out, dont really care TBH as have no respect for a w*nker that threatens my dad over something that is an issue with me Twisted Evil

Just talk to them politly and try to roll it into the road when coming back and if late/early wheel it out of the road,

if they see you making the effort they might be happier Thumbs Up

So is it a race can or a road legal can? What times are you leaving your house and returning? Obviously dependant on the answers to these questions will depend on how you should tackle the issue. My advice though would be to not antagonise the situation. Start your bike and immediately ride off, when you return just trickle it back to your house and then switch it straight off. If you compromise with your neighbours and show them that you are doing your best they ought to get off your case. A little bit of noise should be acceptable to them, they can't be that picky surely?

I've never had a complaint off the neighbours after 9 months of going to work at 6:30 every saturday morning, and i start my engine as soon as my bike is out of the garage. I want to get some heat into the engine, otherwise it'll blow up... (it's a smoker)

On a related note, I've been interested in these for my trackbike as its full race system is very loud and no good for quiet trackdays. I've heard people mention them but never seen them for sale. Anyone here used one? Does it mess up power delivery etc?

Not sure if it's been mentioned before - but could you get a removable baffle made up for the can? Think a company called Beowolf (or similar) could help. That way you can start the bike up as if standard, then when out of earshot, yank the baffle out (usually just attatched by a screw (or just keep the screw out when starting/warming the bike until you're round the corner)).

Another vote for get on the bike, start it and immediately ride away quietly. Dinnae wind up your neighbours. If they see someone loading your bike into a van, you want them to 'phone the police, not sit and watch muttering 'good bloody riddance'.

So lets get this right. You have an illegal race can on your bike that you fitted. It annoys your neighbours and you're pissed off?

Think about that for a moment.

Ahh see you have been spoilt at Oulton Wink Not many tracks actually test the bikes for noise, they just insist on standard OE cans for quiet days, so you can't even get away with the removable baffle type ones.

However, don't take this as gospel, it's something I was told by a bloke at a track...... Confused

Race can, and to be fair to them it is quite loud.
I work leave about 8.30-9ish and get back between 6 and 7pm.

I'm not pissed off at my neighbours. The engine runs free-er and I love the sound with the race can on. I'm pissed at the world for not letting me play with my toys how I want to.

Hey, I never said it was rational or fair.

I'm actually quite pleased with the bloke for having the balls to talk to me rather than just calling the council/cops/whoever.

I'm going to have a chat with my neighbours and see if pushing the bike down the road and starting it straight away will keep them happy.

Seems a bit extreme to me if you're only leaving the house at these times. If it had been 6:00am then fair enough. It must be quiet loud for them to complain about you starting it at these times?

OH gets his bike out about 6am each day and allows it to warm a minute before he leaves, never any complaints with our nieghbours, we are lucky. But then he aint revving the crap out of it like I have heard some bikers do as soon as they start it up.
Neighbours one side are bikers too so we pretty safe on that score Mr. Green

Hi Silver

Think you have an Akrapovic can on the GSXR. The Bandit has a complete Akrapovic system with the removeable baffle. I leave the baffle in most of the time. It does make quite a difference to the power. Knocks 7hp from the top end (5%, so not really noticeable), but tends to put a hole in the power delivery around 3000rpm, especially when cold (which strangely gets worse in winter, suggesting it is lean there, and which improved when I richened the mixture on the needles a touch, but which shows up as a major rich spot on a dyno with an exhaust gas analyser).

Personally the Bandit is not used that much compared to other bikes so I will put up with the road baffle down sides just to avoid winding people up.

All the best

Keith

i would say just try avoid revving it anymore than necessary near home to avoid the neighbours complaining.
then once your clear of your road, let loose! Cool
