I have fitted a Carbon Can Company exhaust to my Bandit, and when I ease off after revving it high in any gear, there is a burbling sound, is this normal??

Thanks

Jon

I had a viper can on my bandit when I bought it. Used to do the same thing. Not quite sure what the reason behind it is though.

I took my can off and replaced it with the legal one when I started commuting into London.

Hell my CG clone does this with a standard system, though only since one of the bolts fell off Confused

I think it's something to do with unburnt fuel hitting something hot and burning off somewhere, oh bugger it, i can't remember, somone else will tell you!

My GS500 does it on a standard can and system.

Its just because your running a little richer than normal (as wave said).

Personally i love the sound, its pretty cool!

Well, its better than the backfiring i used to get because it was running seriously rich Wink

Let me get this straight...

Rich = Too much fuel
Lean = Too much air

Correct?

Well Basically.

But to be precise

Lean = Weaker Fuel to Air Ratio - Caused by too much air making its way into the combustion chamber compared to the amount of fuel

Rich = Stronger Fuel to Air Ratio - Caused by too much fuel making its way into the combustion chamber compared to the amount of air

I think the ideal Air to Fuel ratio is something like

14.7 : 1 (Petrol Engine)

Its been a while since i did this with Volkswagen, so yeah Laughing

The stoichiometric ratio for petrol is 14.7, so for every kg of petrol you'll need 14.7 kg of air. Most engines are set up to run slightly lean, so as to reduce pollution (an abundance of oxygen improves the chances that most/all of the petrol will get burnt). Since the advent of fuel injection and catalytic converters, the aim is to get it as close to the stoichiometric ratio as possible, but still allowing enough oxygen down the exhaust for the oxidation catalyst to work (it needs oxygen to burn the CO and unburnt hydrocarbons). The reduction catalyst reduces the NO back into molecular nitrogen.

Catalytic converters have to be hot to work. Don't take a cold car to an MOT or there's a good chance it'll fail on emissions.
