Was planning on riding to plymouth for the weekend today, so i treated my bike to new oil, chain lube, air in tyres (usual stuff). went into town and my bike died on the way home....

blown my main 30amp fuse...., so i replaced it and it blew again, the ignition was off Shocked and the rectifer smoked...

what could be causing this??? i really need to get to plymouth.

Any ideas?
thanks
drummer

Sounds like there is a short circuit somewhere. Given that there was smoke coming from the rectifier, you have to be suspicious of that.

Disconnect the rectifier, bung a new fuse in and switch the ignition on. If it doesn't blow, you probably have the problem in your hand. Reconect it, if the fuse blows again that proves it.

You should be able to run the bike for quite a while on battery power alone (reg/rec disconnected) if you don't use the lights or electric start, just rememer that when the battery is flat, it stops.

Out of interest, why? Is the R6 unit more reliable?

All the best

Keith (FZR600 owner, and the charging system isn't that pokey)

https://fzrarchives.com/fzr600/work_bench/elec_mods.html#Regulator%20Upgrade

it is newer, (obviously) and charges better and just isn't an FZR6 parts (so shouldn't go wrong)

Hi

I take it they mean a Thundercat regulator / rectifier rather than an R6 one.

Wonder if a Thundercat alternator would fit.

All the best

I got an R6 regulator from a breakers yard earlier, had to do some wiring extensions as the new reg/rec is bigger, and i also had to take out the backing plate for the reg/rec. The thing works perfectly.
Just rode 130 miles with it, and it stayed cool, and charged the battery and everything is fine, for another 3 days (probably - just because i'm not using it Evil or Very Mad )

So, it's a fairly easy mod, and hopefully should work better

not too bad, i did 130 today in full leathers, and had a heavy backpack (heavy duty lock in it) and came off with just a bad neck, but after an hour it was fine.

nice bike though... (when it works)

Hi

The FZR is not really used for long journies. Longest is a couple of hours. Comfy enough but not great (a lot better than the Bimota).

All the best

Keith
