4t 125 goes bang. Costly?

My bike hasn't blew up, I'm just wondering if it does is it going to cost much to fix and would you be able to do it by yourself?

My rev counter hasn't been working for a while and I'm pretty sure I've went into the redline a few times. Whistle

Just want to know what I'm looking at if it ever decides to shit itself. Neutral

Depends what goes wrong, but the chances are it will cost rather more than a typical 2 stroke engine blow up.

Keep on top of the oil changes and you can rev it a lot. It's when you let it get low on oil where it starts having big problems. Even then, it's entirely possible it could free itself if it seizes when it's too hot.

Hmmm, A bit off topic but not worth starting a new thread for, is it possible to fit a tachometer on a bike that doesn't have one? Wouldn't mind one for the CG.

If you can find some part of the ignition circuit to take a trigger voltage from and somewhere to mount it, then I don't see why not. You'd need to extend the wiring loom for lighting it, but that wouldn't be especially tricky.

You can fit one, it picks up the magnetic field in the ht lead.. so very simple to fit..

But it honestly really isn't worth haveing one... if you need one then somethings wrong, once your past the stage where you need it to guage clutch pull revs e.t.c. or for runing in.. i guess on a biger bike its interesting to know your cruiseing revs on the motorway..

but with a 125 then you should be spanking it almost everywhere anyway Razz

Typical failure on a 2 stroke is a heat seizure. New piston and repair barrel. Easy enough to do.

On a 4 stroke there is rather more to go wrong. Drop a valve, snap a cam chain, fail to keep the oil level up and the bill will be large. Snap a con rod and the bill will be larger.

If you took enough time would it be something you could learn to do yourself?

It's a GS125. Don't think it's ready to blow up just yet.

Hi

Depends on what goes wrong. Snap a cod rod and there is a fair chance that major components will be wrecked which will make it totally uneconomic to repair.

For a rough example, my 1200 Bandit jumped a few teeth on the cam chain. Result was 16 bent valves (no apparent piston damage). That is £300 just for the valves from Suzuki, let alone replacing any damaged valve guides or the gaskets.

I lost an MZ 4 stroke 125 motor on E-bay recently. It went for £100. That's for a 2003 DOHC, 4 valve head motor.

Would cost more than that in labour for a garage to look at it probably.
