Hi there, sorry if this seems an inappropriate first post but I've just returned to Bikes after an absence that spans the entire life of the WWW. The bike I'm looking at is a stolen recovered Ducati 750ss registration X868 NVX. If anyone can help me trace the former owner of this bike or even some of its history I would be eternally grateful. Cheers

Why exactly are you trying to trace the former owner? Just trying to find out about service history etc? If so, the DVLA may be able to help.

Err, isn't the former owner on the V5?

You have got the V5, haven't you?

Are you sure it's been 'recovered'?

Hi chaps - thanx for your interest. Yes I'd like to know the service history as some things don't add up. The guy selling it is only a middle man who got it of a guy who got it off the insurance company etc etc. Seems very genuine though. No V5. HPI checks clear but as it WAS one owner no former keepers showing up.

Have been to see it - the general condition doesn't agree with the 18000Km on the clock and there's a knock from the engine on start up I don't like the sound of.

DVLA state they will only give info o former keepers out to new V5 holders - bit bloody late then eh!! Aren't they interested in protecting the consumer? Bloody data protection act! Middle Finger

Out of interest how much are you paying for the bike? In the present market I should expect somewhere around £2500 if its in A1 condition with full service history?

Great bikes btw, very involving, and good sort of power for someone getting back into biking.

There was one way in which the DVLA will give out address', but I can't remember, I read it in a thread on here a few months ago. Done under false pretences of course.

TBH mate I wouldn't even bother if you have any doubts, plenty more fish in the sea and all that. In fact there's a 750ss for p/x in the Exchange and Mart section, he might be up for a straight sale?

There's no genuine reason for not having a V5. If the insurance company sold it on as salvage, they would have passed on the V5 with it, as they effectively bought the bike when they paid out the claim.

The way to get registered keeper details is a DVLA fee paying enquiry. Can't remember what it costs, but a few years ago it was only about £2.50
You need to have reasonable grounds to request the information. The normal reason is that the vehicle left an incident without stopping, and you need to trace the owner.
The downside is, the insurance company should be the previous recorded keeper, but you can specify the date you're interested in with fee paying enquiries, so it might be worth a try if you know roughly when it was stolen.

Or check out the E&M section, like dainesefreak said.

It was most likely written off if there is no V5.

Would still be a V5, the vehicle would belong to the salvage company that bought it off the insurers. Unsure of what'd happen if, say, the bike was third party only. Technically, there'd be no change of owner, and the bike still belongs to the guy it was stolen off.

if it's written off, it has to be re-registered, i'm fairly certain you never get a v5 with a written off bike.

Have a name and address now but he's ex directory so if anyone knows a Christopher Mark Baldwin from Lancing or worthing sussex would ya let him know I'm trying to trace him for innocent reasons. Would there be a ducati owners club in that area would you know?

Appreciate ya help
