yamaha virago 125 oil drain plug removal

Hello, got this virago that needs an oil change, only the clever people at yamaha have positioned the engine in such a way that the frame is half covering it (cant get a socket on it) and the gap between the frame and the plug is so tight, a normal spanner wont fit in, any ideas? anyone...

some ideas ive had is to loosen the engine bolts and just move the engine over a little (but its quite a hefty engine for a 125) and generally seems too much hassle just for an oil change?

cut the offending bit of frame away and weld a piece of tube in that clears the drain plug so that a socket is easily fittable

a spanner normally does the job mate, not sure what u mean by the gap is too small to get a spanner in? cos if thats the case u wont have enough room to take the plug out anyways..



off the top of my head normally use the ring end of the spaner, hit it with your palm to losen then take the spanner away then undo it by hand?

if i have my wire crossed ill let u know when im at work tomorrow and can have a look at one.

Whatever you do, don't overtighten it when you come round to putting it back on. I was lucky in that I was dealing with an alloy filler cap in a cast steel final drive hub, if you've a steel drain plug in an alloy casting, it's rethreading time = , not just time for a new drain plug.

the gap between the plug and the frame is quite small. the ring spanner is just too fat, even the thin low quality ones wont fit, cant get the ring over the nut ? ill try and get some pictures to show you what i mean tomorow

silly question but u sure u got the right bolt?

you should be looking for a 17mm bolt on the left hand side of the engine?

yes, i have the right bolt, it is a 17mm bolt too

i Will double check tomorow but im 100% sure it is
