Ok, spurred by the "what speed have you been at" threads, i was wondering howmany peoples speed was limited by the bikes performance, or their own reservations.

i know my bike can do about 160 odd, but ive only had it to 130,
how about the rest of you?

If there's any road rider who rides their bike at 100% I'd like to meet them.

not sure what the top speed was on the vraptor, but at about 122 on the digi speedo i had to back off cos it seemed that cars were coming at me in reverse very fast. would have liked to have taken it higher,

Maxxed my zx6r quite a few times, only on a long straight though. Apart from that i was probably only ragging it 10% Laughing

If i knew the road i could push it a bit but even then it was probably only 50% of the bikes limit, could lean and scrape the pegs easy but not make the most of the engine. Waaaay too much power. Smile

Finding the limits of your bike isn't down to solely seeing how fast it can go in a straight line Rolling Eyes

had every bike i've had flat out from cb125's to 165bhp 1000exup, its hardly rocket science. Now cornering is a different matter. Very Happy

I bet no one on here is faster than their bike unless they own a CG125...

I assumed he ment in a straight line, which doesn't require skill. Otherwise, a CG125 probably out performs most of us.

I have ridden my little 125 (almost) at it's absolute limits before, full throttle in top gear, tyres sliding towards the outside of the corner. Only on a very few perfectly surfaced corners with good visibility in blistering heat mind you. Laughing Even then, the pegs weren't scraping along the deck, so it would lean further had the tyres been any good.

Mind you, most of the times I have had pegs scraping, the mirrors, bars and my legs and arms have been scraping too. Embarassed I dare say that finding the limits of a 135kg 4t 125 with less than 10hp isn't quite the same task as finding the limits on something bigger. Whistle

If i ran my bike at the redline whilst cornering (or at least attempting to), I'd crash lol

with a high power bike like mine, its a matter of learning when the earliest moment you can apply power is.

Its very difficult to use the power i have on the road.

Hi

With the big bikes they are certainly quicker than me on the road. Not sure that opening it right up once in a blue moon does make you faster than the bike.

I could certainly corner faster than I do. Trouble with that is that I would only need to be unlucky once to wipe myself out on something blocking the road.

All the best

Keith

i a stirght line ive almost have the most out of the SV (130ish) but round courners ive got a long way to go Sad

for 1 my left side just doesnt seem to lean and have a fairly big "chicken strip" (right is getting nice and no that wasnt on roundabouts going round and round!!)

i think it could go much faster but and glad i can as i will probably sell it if i think i dont have any more left (by then be time to upgrade anyways Very Happy, if i ever get there!)

Andy may want to get your wheel alignment checked when you get a chance.

Without a doubt both my bikes the bike is far more capable than I am.

For example if you were to put a racer on my bike and then myself the racer would trance me around a closed circuit. I've ridden that R6 for nigh on a year, and I'm miles away from finding it's limit (although have found the limits of the tyres Embarassed )

The limit can't be literated too easily. Cornering isn't just to do with lean angles - are you braking to the full potential of your bike? How come some racers can brake later than other? Were you leaving front end darkies into that last corner? You may find the limiting factors of cornering on a road bike (ground cleanrence for example), but there's faster ways around a corner. How about exit speed, was the rear about to loose traction and cause a highside? Was it sliding on the way out? Were you getting maximum drive? How's your riding style these days? Does it restrict the limiting factors of the bike technology?.....

I'm no racer, but the limits of motorcycles have got very little to do with attempting to hit the limiter in top. Even at BSB level racing (which is pretty darn high), the back markers are probably taking all this and more into racing, but are still 4 seconds slower a lap than the front runners.

All the more reason why it's better to find your bikes (or in most cases, your) limit on a track.

Hi

I think Craigs23 has made some good points there. Is there really a definate limit to the bikes ability, or is the limit for a bike higher for one rider than for another?

All the best

Keith

Yea, i check about half and hour after putting my rear set back on (reapired it for my journey to Bristol),

wheel alignment is fine, when i let go off the bars it still stays in stright line and doesnt stray either way

I like the points you made craig23 Thumbs Up, never thought of it like that

But the question was specifically directed towards straight line speed, nothing else Smile.

Only bike I can think of I haven't maxed out in top gear is my current KTM. And that's because I've only used it on fairly small off road areas.

As for really pushing a bike including corners, I don't think I'll ever be there. There is a massive amount of skill required to be able to hold a bike right on the limit of traction while getting the power on coming out of a corner and similarly holding the brakes on into a corner.
I doubt even top GP riders will be on the limits for the latter most of the time.

Must have miss read 'how many peoples speed was limited by the bikes performance, or their own reservations' as overall performance, not just straightline.
