Check your oil and coolant levels, tyre pressures and air filter. Go over the fasteners looking for looseness in things like fairings, mirrors, wheels, barends, levers, pegs, check your brake fluid level, pad thicknesses etc.

I don't know if the SV really needs it or not, but I'd not be leaving it an awful lot longer than 1500 miles between oil changes.

Just give your bike the once over before you leave, lights, brakes, tyres etc. Make sure your mobile is charged and you have the number for a breakdown recovery stored.

Might be worth getting a map printed of where your going if you don't know it well.

Type as much of the directions as you think you can follow and print it out in a big font, stick it to your tank in a clear plastic wallet and masking tape it to your tank then you don't have to keep stopping.

I did that when i went with a mate to pick a bike up miles away. Worked a treat.

This is an interesting topic. I have to admit that I've never really thought of doing things differently for long trips. Theres some useful suggestions here, which I will certainly take into account when preparing for future trips. Thumbs Up

A whole 168 miles huh. Wink

I'll be doing wolverhampton - my place (330 miles). Jump on the m6 and follow signs for the north Wink Thats the only directions I'm taking this time.

I say take a credit card, rac/aa card and some warm clothing. Thats all I ever take. Oh and some spare cash incase your card doesn't work.

Take a pocket bodging kit.

Should consist of:

Superglue
One of those screwdrivers with interchangable heads
Mole grips
Gaffa tape
Cable ties

Nikwax your gear, water will just bead up and roll off, so that should help if the weather turns on you.
