It's your money but for the price of those two you could buy yourself a nice 600 which will be a much better commuter plus a fantastic weekend toy and track weapon.

I know you said we'd all say "Get a 600", but that's for a good reason.

My advice would be to have some test rides and see first hand what sort of bike you would like. You might surprise yourself Thumbs Up

Please, give this some thought before you do,

i thought the same as you and thought "25 miles on country lanes, RS125 would be great (although hadnt pasted my test) and love it for a while, however when you have to warm it up and pay for the best oil its not as fun

i think highly tuned 2ts should be sunday playtimes only, get the 400, an IL4 400 could be as much fun Thumbs Up (not that ive had one mind)

Brand new 125's are rip offs, i wouldnt spend that sort of money on a 125 + they are bound to brake down all the time.

You could take it to bed with you and they will still blow up.

You only gotta look on different forums and see how many people post about problems with them, try saying that to all the owners.

They are too higly tuned for the cc and the crankshaft aint even strong enough for the power, even people that worked at the aprilia dealership admit this, very cheap bikes.

How about a compromise.

You are saying you have got a ZXR400, and I'm guessing a new RS125 are gonna be around £3500-£4000.

Why not get a second hand RS125 (£1500 for a good one maybe), sell the ZXR and get a 600?

Could be fun, and you'd have it all. Bastard Thumbs Up

if you get a brand new 125, you'll have to ride it like a pussy for 1000 miles, unless you get it run in on a dyno, which is supposed to make the bike run much better, and engine last longer

That because they are highly tuned 2 stokes, not because they are unrealiable, Confused

if you change piston rings when your meant to and rebuild the engine when your meant to they fine!! also service then right and use right oil Thumbs Up

125's are real fun but the price you pay round about £3500 is a rip off coz ull get board of it in a year then wont to sell it and only get about £16-2000 if its in really nice nick. i had this trouble when i sold mine after a year, my advise is just stick with a bigger bike thats a four stroke or just get your self a nice little 125cc 4-stroke commiutor bike like a gn125 for going to work or something along those lines as they tend to hold there resale value better then a 2-stroke.

Not really if you put the miles on it. A warranty wont cover a top end rebuild, as it's a serviceable part, not a defect.

As for 4-strokes holding their value better, it's more to do with the fact that they are much less to buy brand new anyway, and are easier to look after.

Hi

40 miles a day is 200 a week, 800 a month and a top end rebuild every 6 months. I do like small 125s and the RS is reliable if treated well (trouble is that most of the owners are learners, and are so learning how to maintain a bike, normally learning by making mistakes), but that starts getting expensive. Especially on journies that for much of the year are going to be fairly unenjoyable anyway.

By the way, for those saying 2 strokes are high maintenance compared to 4 strokes, that is more a case of highly tuned bikes are high maintenance compared to the low tuned bikes they are used to (for the same state of tune as an early RS125, modern 600s would need to be pumping out almost 30% more power than they manage now). This weeks MCN has an article on the new V twin Aprilia supermotos. They specify new pistons at 60 hours running time (competition use), which compares to the 50 hours before a top end rebuild on the FR125 kart race engine (which has virtually the same top end as the Aprilia RS125).

All the best

Keith
