Hi,

I realise you've probably heard/explained this loads of times but a couple of days ago I bought a 1995 ZXR400 and today it's sadly being restricted. I get to cough up an evil £250+ for this to be done as apparently they need the bike for 2 days, when a friend of mine says it only takes a roughly 2hours to do.
I realise they have other work to do besides mine but I've also worked in the trade and know how the workload is booked in/managed and am wondering if the dealership are trying to rip me off because I'm female? The work hasn't been paid for yet so I still have time...can any advise me? Also, how does the restriction effect the performance of the bike...I've heard alot of different stories?! Confused Neutral

P.S. I've read your rules and I hope this is posted in the right Forum Confused

Thanks

Ermm £200 is about the usual rate I think?

Yes it will destroy performance both top speed and acceleration.

depends on what the restrictors are, but your looking at around £100-150 for the kit( complete and utter rip off for what they are) then around 2 hours labour if they take there time, i fitted my restricted carb slider in about an hour and i was taking my time ( and got them for free)

Apparently it's four small washers? Surely it doesn't take trained mechanics a day to that?

Just pay the extra for the genuine kit.
That way If you decide to take it out you've got 'proof' that it is restricted.

I've known some places try and rip you off simply because there are L plates on the bike. Yes, it happens. Try and find somewhere you can trust, or ask around on here/with friends for good places in your area.

The works been done and I ended up paying £250+ but don't know how long it took them, the invoice just had price and parts. Performance isn't too bad, still pulls at 80mph but due to rain I haven't taken it further. Cheers for your advice Thumbs Up

Sorry to say it but £250+ Is well over the odds. About £100 over the odds in my experience.

And I agree with about 40 mins to fit.

It depends what bike you are fitting them to, a zxr has 4 carbs so take a bit longer.

Would take an hour to do if you don't rush it.

I derestricted an R6 in an hour, including all fairings etc, and I've never even worked on a jap sportsbike before.

I'd say 40mins for an engineer that's probably done one before is more than enough!

I realise this is no good for the person who started this thread, but just so you know, there is no legal requierment to have an "fi international" kit fitted to your bike. You can restrict it in any way so long as the bike produces no more than 33bhp peak at the rear wheel (not at the crank). Its entirely legal to go and buy some washers from B&Q and drill them out to the right diameter bore, and if you require a certificate for insurance, then take the bike to a dyno centre and get a printout proving power output. My mate did exactly this, it cost him under £5 for the washers and £40 for the dyno time. Seems a hell of a lot better value than between £150-£250 for a bit of paper with no legal worth and 4 washers.

Btw you are never asked to produce a certificate or restriction to the police as it isnt a legal requirement, the only people who ask for certificates are some insurance companies (motorcycle direct definitely dont) Thumbs Up

How do you know the correct size to drill out the washers to? Would be a bastard if you drilled them out and the dyno showed just over 33bhp Sad

the usual thing to do it post on the forum asking for some old restrictors or washer sizes, as i think it was dodsi or greg who had noted some sizes for some bikes, which in all honesty will cost you penuts

£15 for a dyno run and theres ya proof,

This is exactly what im in the proccess of doing, got the restrictors of a friend for free, fitted them myself ( and there the carb sliders not washers) and its booked in on monday for a dyno run

( altho finding a place close by that has a dyno might not be as easy as you would have thought, as i have found out)
