Right, bit of a bizarre question.

As much as I enjoy riding, I feel that the ride quality, size and stability of the CG is really putting me off.

Anybody that is/was a learner reserve judgement about whether they totally love biking or not until they got a bigger bike?

Cheers,

Toby

such is the ride, quality and stability of a CG. ideal for low speed pootling... gets a bit hairy when going quicker.

you'll notice a HUGE difference on a bigger bike

That's the thing,

Spent quite a long time on the CG, and the thing is I ride at top whack on it most of the time, it's quite bumpy and the handling gets a bit vague at 50+.

Even if I did get a bigger bike, I probably wouldn't do over 80 anyway but I think something heavier with better suspension would change the way I ride anyway.

I can't focus totally on the road when my bike is doing the triple jump round a corner.

That's half the fun of a small bike though. 60mph feels very fast, partly because you're having to rag it to keep it at that speed, but also because the thing is bloody instable and wobbles about like no tomorrow.

Get a big bike and you will find far less opportunities to ride 'fast' without breaking the speed limit.

Do you take your bike on long rideouts? Even though it's small, you should have no problem doing 100+ mile rides into the most scenic countryside England has to offer. And that's what's gonna increase your enjoyment no end compared to always pootling about through the urban sprawl.

I had a CBR125 before the gixxer and it did get a bit hairy at high speeds in the corners, if your planning on keeping the bike a while then get some Bridgstone BT039's on it and that will help the handling a good bit, either that or start necking brave pills Laughing

Yup I did I thought cheap transport (winging 125s for a bit) , then got something bigger NTV650 isn't really a sporty bike or anything but the Vtwin pulls pretty hard.

I had a Yam SR125 for my first bike. 18 months on a CBT before I did my test.
You will find a huge difference when you get a bigger bike. It's not only the power difference, it's also the physical size of the bigger machines you will feel more confident on it.
Although my first big bike was only a 660cc single which topped out at 110 it was a great experience moving to it.

Thanks for the info guys,

I'm looking at doing the restricted test instead of my DA (I'm 21) as I will be able to afford my restricted much quicker.

Those Battleax's look good, but £60 for a front? Reluctant to pay that on a CG.

Plus I think I use tubed tyres (Wheels have spokes).

Yeah, interesting about those tyres for 125s. I know CGs usually have tubed tyres. What I don't know is if that means they have to have? Confused

I wonder about the stability on a bigger bike. You feel more stable at speed I'm sure, but I genuinely worry about getting a big bike which is too heavy / large for me in all other situations. I'm 5'10'' and of average strength I think. I'd love to get a ZZR600 but (aside from price) they're supposed to be relatively heavy. Probably just something you learn with experience: how to handle the weight and size.

We've got to reserve judgement though haven't we! I'm itching for a bigger bike and I know when I ride it, it's going to feel great! A bit like when I first rode a bike full stop. "Woh, yeah, fresh air, throttle in my hand, ride 'em!" And that was just an SR125 on my CBT! Shifty Embarassed

Actually, I've not really reserved judgement have I. I've made a prior positive judgement. Ah well...

It's just annoying it's all so expensive, eh?

Best Thumbs Up

I'm not sure that the CG should necessarily be the bike that will tell you if you totally love biking or not.

I'm sure that the very first time that you swung a leg over a petrol driven 2 wheeler it gave you a buzz big enough to say "Yep, this is what I wanna do".

I must admit that feeling hasn't left me yet and I still enjoy the fluttering that accompanies each ride.

I sometimes look back on my little Susuki GS125 and wish that I could take her out for a razz now. I could do stuff on that little bike that I just can't on the XJR1300 or even the Zephyr.

So, you may well be ready for a bigger bike, but remember to treat it with a bit of respect 'cos it's gonna be just a tad different!
