PostPosted: 21:21 - 14 Mar 2006    Post subject: I have a full bike licence - do i need to do a Theory test.? Reply with quote

Hi, Ive had a ful bike licence for 7 years, when i did my test i had to do a theory test, then the practical.

I have never taken my car test. I now wish to get a full car licence and no one can give me a definate answer whether i need to take another theory test before i take my practical test in a car.

one answer was - No, you have a full driving licence (pink id card) but only with motorcycle entitlement on it, therefore only a practical test to add the car entitlement id needed.

another was - yes you need to do a theory test if you wish to add any type of entitlemnt to your existing licence.

another was - No a full bike licence makes you exempt from doing another theory test.

and the last was - you dont need to, as the theory certificate i hold when i did my bike test will cover me.

The above answers came from the DVLA, DAS and 2 different driving instructors

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHICH IS TRUE. ITS REALLY GETTING ON MY TITS NOW!!!!

Thanks to all

Yes as far as I'm aware.

The Hazard perception is different for a start.

( Waits for the arguing )

You have to take another theory test when getting a bike license regardless of whether you hold a car license or not, so I'd be surprised if it didn't work the same the other way around.

You need a car theory for cars and a seperate one for bikes. Not one for both. Thumbs Up

It used to be one for both I think (pass one and you don't need to retake.) No longer is the case.

I took my car test first, passed my practical and got my full licence. But when I took my full bike test, I had to do the theory again as well. It works the same the other way round.

Same here...

Passed my Car licence about 15 years ago (so has pretty much every entitlement under the sun on it bar M-bike and full HGV, and I can tow a caravan...) but I had to sit theory, hazard perception and Practical for the bike. The funny thing is that I could've jumped straight onto a scooter with no L-plates and no CBT as my licence had full licnece for mopeds on it, even though I had never been near one in my life.. Smile

Now, with the bike entitlement, it's running out of space on the back.. Smile. Might go for the HGV just to get the full set...

Yes you do, sorry to bear bad news.

Who needs to take a test?

You will need to take a theory test if you want a licence for a new category of vehicle, for example, if you have a car licence and you want a motorcycle licence you will need to take a theory test.

If, however, you want to upgrade within a vehicle category you will not normally need to take a theory test, for example, if you have a full automatic car licence and you want a manual car licence you will not have to take a theory test.

I passed my bike test before the theory tests were introduced, they were around when I took my car test, and as I had a full bike licence I didn't have t take a car theory. I guess that loophole closed then.

I've been driving for some years, but before doing my DAS last year I still had to retake the theory and hazard perception tests
... so yes it works both ways

I have been driving cars since 1986 and took my bike test last October just before my theory test expired after 2 years. I have to say that I found the theory / hazard perception test really difficult, I was swotting up for 2-3 hours a day for a week or so.

Got 100% on theory which pleased me no end.

Wot I'm saying is dont book it, turn up and expect to pass it wont happen. You Must SWOT!

Good Luck

You need to do a seperate theory for every test you do. Whether its a PSV, HGV, bike or car.
The hazard perception is different for each theory test too.
Its just a goverment scam to get more money out of you!!
