I want to overclock my AMD Sempron 3000+ in my laptop as it is quite frankly, shit. What tools can assist me to safely overclock my CPU?

Dunno just general installing applications etc etc, i'm probably expecting a bit too much cause it seems I compare it with my P4, 1GB RAM PC at home. Laughing

you will probably find the bottleneck in your system will be the hard drive. A lot of laptops use very slow 4200rpm drives, whilst your desktop probably has a 7200rpm drive. hence the slowness installing apps. a gig of ram will help as would either a 5400rpm high cache drive or a 7200rpm laptop drive. although a 7200 drive may cause the laptop to run a fair bit hotter (the main reason makers use 4200 drives).

each to their own I guess, personally I am a fan of AMD, cost effective and good performance compared to massively overpriced Intel chips.

Just ran the Belarc Advisor for info on my machine and it catalogues the CPU as a "1.80 Ghz AMD Athlon 64". Does this mean I am running a 64bit PC?

yep, but dont expect full 64bit support from acer just yet, makers use the 64 bit cpu only because AMD stopped making 32 bit versions.

IMHO more publicity hype than real gain, real time tests have shown an average performance increase of less than 20%
the AMD 64 bit does however outperform the Intel equivalent in tests I have seen.

Best thing about the AMD64 currently, in my opinion, is that is runs so cool compared to the older chips. Granted I'm running a water based cooling system, but it's a single loop with N-bridge, GPU (an X850 XL a friend gave me when I moved to a PCIE board) and the CPU on it, the CPU temp rarely goes over 38 degrees, even under heavy load. My old Barton XP3200+ heated the room, let alone a case Confused

Been very impressed at my dirt cheap Venice core AMD64 3000+, runs ~1.8 out of the box, currently stable (Pri95 tested) at 2.3. Had it up to 2.6 but it was getting decidedly flaky at that point, although I suspect if I'd spent time adjusting the ram setup I could have improved if not solved that (and believe me, I'm no overclocking guru). The sheer flexibility of these chips amazes me.
