I've had it with my old pile of shite and I need a new PC.

Recommendations, please, of good places to buy that will let me pick and choose my system - eg. I don't need a monitor, don't need dvd drives, don't need anything I can cannibalise from this one.

Thank ye.

Always gone with ebuyer. Good prices and good service. Some people don't like them, but I've always found them to be the best.

You could also try dabs and insight

Have you looked into replacing the components on your machine instead?

All you'd possibly need is a new motherboard, cpu, ram etc..

If not Dell factory outlet seems to be doing some reasonable deals at the moment.

Ebay is your friend.

Just got a Giga-byte GA-7NNXP mobo for £72 delivered

AMD Barton XP3000+ 400FSB CPU £70 delivered

Now I need new memory £103 for 2 gb (Ebuyer) and a CPU cooler £20.

Should make a pretty powerfull setup and at a later date when they've dropped in price I'll be getting a decent graphics card to replace my Nvidia 5200.

Should be able to sell the old board, 2.4 AMD chip, 512mb of memory and OEM XP for about £150 so that offsets the cost nicely.

I've heard savastore.com spoken highly of. They do basic systems (see here). I have used ebuyer ok (but I still don't like their delivery policy).

However, I do know that Komplett.co.uk do upgrade bundles which sounds just the thing you're looking for - see here.

HTH Thumbs Up

I gotta agree with ebay. I was after either a Radeon 9700 or 9800 pro, and they go for quite a decent price on ebay, between £50-£70. I was always outbid though, but then instigator sold me his 9800 pro for £40 Thumbs Up Top graphics card, even for todays standards.

Yeah eBay if you know what you're looking for, and eBuyer for stuff which isn't much cheaper on eBay.

Savastore are part of Watford Electronics; I always heard their customer service and returns policy are an utter scam. eBuyer aren't much better to be honest, but they are the better company. I suppose it's the price you pay for how cheap their parts are.

Hi

Ebuyer are cheap until they make a mistake and you get totally the wrong item. Then it is a nightmare to get it changed or get your money back.

Bought some stuff from https://www.udiggit.com/index.html recently and very impressed with their service.

All the best

Keith

Never happened to me. Must have spent nearly £1000 with them over the years, always had good service, deliveries on time (even christmas eve) etc.

Only done about 3 orders with them, but one of those was wrong (they sent totally the wrong motherboard, and worth about half the board we had paid for).

All the best

www.savastore.com

Is watford electronics, and are reuptedly very good indeed. They let you configure each detail of your system and you dont' have to have stuff like Monitor etc.

I'm planning to go there when I next buy a computer!

I don't want to upgrade mine, done that before, its just too old now for it to be cost-effective.

I do intend to nick some pieces from it though, such as the DVD drive.

I like Dells but I've never found an option to ditch the monitor on their site?

Will check out all links later on - thanks chaps. Thumbs Up

Go for a Dell business PC, they don't come with Monitors usually.

Gone for a Dell Outlet job in the end - Dells that get scratched or dented during build.

I bought via their ebay shop and got it for less than half the price of a mint condition machine of same spec. Thumbs Up

Delivery in 8 - 10. Will let you know how it turns out.

Just as an off-topic aside, I've been building PC's for people for 8 years or so now, and started off using MSI motherboards, as the cheap shop I bought from sold a lot fo them.

The boards (about 10 in total) fairly consistently all fucked up within 2/3 years and had to be replaced. I'll never touch an MSI board again throgh choice.

Just my experience.

Bendy, will be curious to see how "damaged" the PC actually is. I'd be tempted by a half-price dell if it's just superfical scratches.

Bought all our computers from https://www.aria.co.uk/ for the past few years now. Can't recommend them strongly enough. The one time they got it wrong they organised the pick-up and gave me a free upgrade as well.

eBuyer are OK, apart from the fact I forgot my login details and now can't buy anything off there and they use SHITTYlink for delivery.
