Hello everybody long time no speak,

I have just purchased a GS 500 off my friend NY_sniper , and because he's a mate he has'nt cleaned the bike lol , and its mega mucky.

Anyway because its an unfaired bike , am i still ok to jet wash it?

Any places i shouldnt go near besides the electrics?

Cheers all

I wouldn't recommend jet washing TBH!

I would recommend taking all the panels off, erm, both panels off, and giving all the frame a good clean.

The GS can rot super quick if not kept shiny, and is proper easy to clean, as nothing is hidden behind bloody big fairings! Just give it a wash, and a spray with scottoil f365, or if you're on a budget, some cheapie silicone spray will keep it looking like new.

Have a look at www.gs500e.co.uk Cracking bunch of guys, and know all there is to know about the GS. Fancy a set of RGV USD forks? Wink

Thumbs Up

What kind of jetwash? A home jetwash (Karcher) on a low setting is a bit different to the high power (unchangeable) jetwash down the garage.

I jetwash mine. At the power I use it, it's no different to the hose but it uses less water (smaller spray) and I can add detergent.

Keep the jetwash a decent distance from the bike, not right up against it.

Don't wash all the grease out of any bearings (wheel bearings for example).

Spray it after washing - WD40 on the electrics and Scottoil FS 365 everywhere else. Twice a year with ACF-50.

In my experience the jetwash is OK but not all the time.
It's almost impossible to do as good a job manually.
Keep the pressure down if need be by not going to close in at vulnerable places such as wheel and swing arm bearings, don't spray up under the tank.

I wouldn't jetwash that bike - It may disintergrate under pressure! Laughing

Nah, best way to clean a bike is with hot soapy water and a tub of elbow grease.

You'll prob need to adjust the chain too!

Make sure its cool (cold, not funky & hip), use a cleaner like Muc-off and use a jet wash....
Dont aim it directly at the electrical componants as you'll end up having to dry it all out.

I always use a low pressure jet wash on mine and never ever had any problems. Be sensible where you point it.
Invest in ACF 50 water repellent spray, its dear but ideal for exposed metals.

You haven't seen this one.

Marc you might want to fix the indicators too. Oh and the front brake could be useful too. And put the grill back on.

As for washing it, just a nice hot bucket of water seems like the best idea, WD40 it back to last thursday and fix the above problems. I think you got a good deal myself.

A simple way to instantly double the value the bike.

1) Open filler cap
2) Fill with petrol

I used a jetwash once on my GS5,

Broke down 5 miles later Laughing

Use a rag and soapy water now Thumbs Up

To be fair - most of the electrics arre hidden into the main headlight unit, stear away from blasting that and you should be allright.

Dont forget that the seat leaks, so try not to get any under there - dont want the battery getting too wet now do we?

I never use a Jet / Power washer on my Bike, My mate who's a Bike Mechanic (and a very good one at that, has years of experience) bollocked me for using one, he said it can do untold damage in alsorts of places, seals, washers, electrics, etc. etc.

So now me play safe, 2 Buckets of Hot soapy water, and Hand sweeping brush (to do the wheel) and a sponge, BUMMER knowing that I've ggot a power washer in the shed 'n all Confused

Ask any of the South East lot about jet washing and blowing fuses before i rideout and i think i might get a mention Laughing

That was the first and last time it will jetwash any bike. Just get some "take all the muck off" stuff loads of different makes, seem to work i found

I use ours for cleaning all the oil from the drive after I've cleaned the chain.

Wouldn't use it on the bike though.

Nice pre-wash lathering of Autoglym Motorcycle cleaner and then a hot soapy wash seems to work okay. Gets easier with regular cleaning.
