Please can anyone help?? (preferably with some helpful suggestions)
Bought a Cagiva Canyon 500 single (don't say it, "what dod you wanna go buy one of them for"??) I heared it all before!
Right, Had a little test ride out on the bike when my friend bought it down for me, It's been about a week and a half now, I just went to jump on the bike to take it for M.O.T, got about 150 yds down the road, I'd only nipped round the corner (thankfully) came to the junction, and the bike cut out, but this wasn't really a problem, coz i just thought, "Oh the bikes Cold" went to restart it, The Startings sometimes a bit "Whiny" but this time, the bike started and MADE THE MOST APPALING REALLY LOUD WHINING NOISE, A biker friend who just happened to be stood nearby said, that doesn't sound good, so I thought I'd better stop the engine before i did any damage. I pushed by the bike home, and with the help of another biker mate, we checked the Oil level (all OK there) got the Manual out and started reading, by which time we went back to the bike, and I tried to start it again, to see if there was any difference, and OH yes, this time there's a Really Knocking, Metal against Metal type noise besides the whining sound, When me mate first heared the noise, he said, "maybe Starter Motor Sticking", but then when he heared the "Knocking" sound, he said, "Maybe Not"!
Any ideas as to pointing me in the right direction of a problem, another mate when I Emailed him said, "It sounds expensive"!!
I flippin hope not!!
Clutch, Gearbox??? Something else maybe???

That sounds like some piston slap to me? Some sideways movement knocking it against the barrel? If so, would it explain the screeching too.
I'd say you need to control the damage, so get it down to a mechanics without riding it. If a piston is slapping, riding the bike more isn't going to do it any good. Need a new piston and/or a rebore, but luckily isn't that expensive. |

Your post isn't really that clear. Is the noise only happening whilst the starter motor is turning, or does it carry on once the bike's started?
Piston slap sounds pretty unlikely ____________________ Hard livin', hard luck. |

Or don't you know?
Also the engine in it is a Rotax unit, so they are fairly easy to repair, and there is an abundance of parts for it too. |
Sorry Craig Luvvy, I dodn't know, I've only just got the Bike, and me mate before only had it for about 50miles, it's done about 10k if that helps, d'ya think it would have had a new Cambelt in in that time?? I don't think so??
I didn't realise that these had the Rotax engine in (don't ask, I still haven't even read the bloomin' manual, I just "bought" the Bike) I've known about rotax's from previous experience with working in a bike shop that used to have alot of dealings with many Canam Bombadiers many moons ago, bad memories of smashed to smithereens pistons and raking little pieces out the cylinders!! I hope it's not going to be as drastic as anything like that!!!

Does anybody know if the Rotax engine has a "Dry Sump"?? I was playing with a thought?? or possible engine pump failure maybe???
I'm still scouring the Manual for info, and there's not alot here to be going on?? does anybody on here know anybody that has got a Cagiva Canyon??

Hi,
Could you get a bike mechanic to look at it? i'm sure they will be able to tell you straight away what the problem is.
Sorry to hear about your bike btw

Would you bloody Aadam and Eve it?!!! T'other halfs just gone to it now, started it up wi' no bother at all, the noise isn't there! Bloody Typical!! I still don't trust it though, no sooner will I get down the road, it'll probably start doing it again, it must have made the noise for a reason
Anyway, bugger it today! The suns out, I'm off out to play up on the North York Moors on the VTR So I don't flippin' care about the Cagiva for the next few hours!

Could even be the starter button itself? |
It turned out to be the Starter motor in the end, I've just been to finally take it for M.O.T and it was doing it again, and the lads reckon it is the starter motor so now I need to get hold of a workshop manual for it as we tried to get the cover off the starter motor while I was there, it the guy said the cover almost seemed like it was spring loaded so he didn't risk taking it off, other wise we might have had more problems, as it stands at the mo, it seems very poorly now I've rode it back (I know I know, don't say it, I should have got it looked at before) but I needed to get it for M.O.T, and now it's got M.O.T the Flippin' thing doesn't work but at least it's taxed and tested now!!!
Anybody know anything about Cagiva's??
