how can you say that your spark is rubbish ?
all ignition probs come from a lack of maintenance :
- worn plug
- clogged or dirty carb
- oil pump not adjusted
- dirty air filter
and rarely worn plug cap or ignition coil . also a bad process of starting .
i suggest : clean tank (fuel line) , air foam filter , carb , fit a BR9EIX plug . check the ignition as shown in my file https://www.geneva-racing.com/~alains/NSRtips.doc
to start :
- choke on , no acceleration
- start , let it run until it begin to stuff
- put a bit of acceleration (around 2000 rpm) and take choke off
- let it like that for 2-3 mn
then your engine must stay à 1400 rpm (+- 100)

Hi

To go with the above, what condition is the battery in?

While a cdi unit can fail like that, more often they just stop working altogether.

All the best

Keith

check in this order:

Battery
Coil
alternator
Ignitor (often wrongly called the CDI)

most likely you've got a shagged battery-if the battery is marginal, the draw of the started will drop the voltage enough to make the ignition box malfunction.

ask a car owning pal to jump your bike from their car, put jump leads from negative to negative, positive to positive, taking car not to touch the positive lead against the frame.

If the bike starts easily, its a good indication that your battery is knackered.

if you have a voltmeter check the voltage. fully charged is 12.7 volts or thereabouts. 11.9 volts is discharged and anything below that means the battery is faulty.

just because a battery charger says "Full" doesnt mean the battery works properly.
