Just trying to get 2 computers talking together via a Netgear hub.
One is Windows 2000 and the other Win98SE.

Now both say they're in the same workgroup (HOME_1) but I can't get windows to see either machine. The TCP/IP addresses are ok.

I can ping each PC and I can ping the hub.

I'm now at the banging head against brick wall time.

Any help and assistance and pointers appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation.

OK I'm a bit lost with networking now. But I used to have a similar problem. Have you got some files actually being shared on the computers? That fixed it for me. They wont see each other properly unless there is something there to use.

I guess it's because on a large network you'd end up with loads of useless computers being listed or something like that.

Rick.

Is file and printer sharing enabled on both machines?

Also are you logging on to both machines with the same username and password? To be honest mate i find networking 98 to xp / 2000 a ball ache and its my job. Wink

A shot in the dark are you using the same subnet something like 255.255.255.0

It should be simple but it isn't. I feel for you, having tried to do the same thing before.

Can't quite remember how I solved the problem now, think it was install XP on the other machine Laughing

Thumbs Up checked that.

I can't see any reason for this not working.
I have checked the settings and the same user is logged on on each PC (98SE machine auto logs/starts with this user). The file/printer sharing is enabled. They are in the same workgroup.

Just that on the Win2K machine the network neigbourhood comes up blank. I'll try attaching a laptop via wireless (also on W2K) to see if that'll work but the problem still remains the files I want to access are on the Win98SE machine Mad

Thanks for the replies so far.
Still looking for help here, keep the suggestions coming.

Having a similar problem to this at home, except i'm setting up a domain with a windows 2003 server box, normal desktop and i can't for the life of me get the server to accept the joining request from the workstation to join the domain. Possible thing i'm thinking of:

Arrow You have the correct cables? straight through or cross over? straight through if your using the hub.

Arrow are you sure the cables your using aren't kinked anywhere? i.e. dodgy filaments, etc?

Arrow You don't have any third party firewall's running on each machine that could be stopping and background services? If so i'd disable them

Arrow Thinking minds gone blank, but i'll most likely think of a few more later on when i'm playin about with my boxes

Good luck!

Mike Smile

if you can ping, then you should be able to :

click Start, then run.
in the box type: "\\IPADDRESS\"
No quotes, use the IP of the 98 PC instead of IPADDRESS

It sounds like you don't have anything controlling naming on your network. Try installing the netbios protocol on the 98 PC.

nearly forgot, if either have a firewall, try disabling it, just to make sure. If this works, then allow the relevant ports for file/print sharing.

Best way is to map a network drive, that way the machines don't even need to see each other in the workgroup.

If you know it is set up correctly (same IP range/subnet), then share the drive and just map it on the other PC.

Easy Thumbs Up Smile

Nope. Comes up with dialogue box 'The network path was not found'.

Nope. Comes up with dialogue box 'The remote computer is unavailable'.

Just looking to see if it's anything to do with any services I may, or may not, be running.

Problem not sorted, so keep those ideas coming Thumbs Up
Thanks.

if you can ping both PCs from both PCs, but you can't \\IPADDRESS\ and you have the right protcols/services installed (tcp/ip and microsoft file and print sharing) then you have a firewall (or something that is blocking ports) on at least one of the machines (or between them).

Sorry, I'm out of ideas without looking at it. Good luck!

Incidentally, I take it you have tested the 2 newer machines (XP/2000) and they work ok. If they don't, I'd concentrate on that first and then get 98 working.

As said earlier in the thread, have you made sure that both machines actually have a folder "Shared"? That solved the problem for me - networking didn't become easy until WinXp Smile

That would not solve the issue of being able to ping another machine though.

Can you do post the IP config details here so I can have a look? (start > run > cmd > type "ipconfig /all" (without quote marks and include the space Thumbs Up)

A few suggestions here that I don't think have been done yet (only skim read the post though)

have you checked the local sucurity policy on the PC (this may be the win2K one only havn;t touched 98 in years so not sure if it is in there)

on the Win2K click

Arrow Control Panel
Arrow Administrative Tools
Arrow Local Security Policy

Now look under Sucurity Settings --> Local Policies --> User Rights Assignment

then check in the window on the right that the setting "Access this computer from the network" has 'Everyone' In it and the setting "Deny Access to this computer from the network" only has the "Support _######" in it if it has "guest" then remove this as guest would be the account it would use for anonymous access.

Then go to the "Security Options" section (which is under the User Rights Assignment bit on the left)

and check that in here the guest account is enabled (should show as Account:Guest Account Status) if it says N/A or anything other than Enabled/Disabled here then go to User management and make sure the guest account is enabled.

I hope this has all made sense and may be of some help, if your still stuck send me a PM with your phone number (landline preferably as I get free calls) and i'll give you a ring later tonight to see if we can get them talking to each other.

Thank-you AcidBurnz & 89CBRChris for your recent posts.
I'm tied up on other things until the weekend so I'm hoping to get back to it then.

I'll have a look at your suggestions and post back here any updates.

Thanks once again for taking the time to give me your input.
