Full tint i believe is but if your carrying a spare clear one should be ok. Not heard of any one on here getting stoped for it.

My instructer used to wear one Rolling Eyes

Reason is probably somthing to do with it being too dark and impairing vision. Although you can wear sunglasses etc. Confused

Depends how dark the tint is.

Cos you (supposedly) can't see where you're going.

You can use any helmet with visor of at least 70% light transmittance at any time

The law a couple of years ago was...

Quote:
It’s illegal at the moment to use a visor that has not been manufactured to BS4110 or European Standards ECE22.05.
Last year trading standards officers were told to start confiscating dark visors from shops and dealerships across the country.
But it is hoped that work being carried out by the British Standards Institute will show that the use of dark visors can significantly benefit vision.
The current standards require the visor to transmit 50% or more available light, as well as conforming to anti scratch and shatter standards.
Dark visors usually transmit between 20 and 25% of light available, also there are concerns that they are not scratch or shatter proof.
Another concern is that some riders would use them at night, which will be illegal even if dark visors are legalised.
The British MotorCycle Federation have said that if the standard goes through for the dark visors with a limit of 25% available light transmitted and scratch and shatter proof, then riders would have the same benefits as car drivers wearing sunglasses.

Hi

A very light tint is legal, as long as the visor carries the relevant standards marks. However the limit is very light, barely noticeable.

All the best

Why do you want to know? It is illegal but people use it and don't get stopped. Why it is illegal I am told is that when night falls your vision is seriously impaired Idea . If you want to stay legal, the best option is to either wear sunglasses Cool , or have a dual visor where inside you can slide down the sun visor (which is what I have - works brilliantly), or if you can be bothered then carry two and when it gets darkish then change Confused .

Hope this helps.
Cheers

Hi

There are other issues (beyond Darwinism, when people ride with a dark visor at night), as some tinted visors can affect the colours they transmit. Not a good idea when they are traffic lights!

They became illegal around 1987 when the updated Bristish Standards were made mandatory. Not only affected light transmission but also the strength of visors and scratch resistance.

All the best

Keith

I have one, and swear by it for summer riding.

The unnamed dealer I bought it from told me in no uncertain terms that I did not buy it from them (wink wink), and he was only selling it to me as he knew me. This is a huge UK dealer, and he didn't appear to be joking! (He actually took me into the back room. Shocked )

Actually, I have never had any bother at all, even when sat at lights next to police vehicles, and the dealer has never had any trouble selling them, but they are illegal, and if you are wearing one when involved in an accident, and the insurance company find out, then who knows what will happen.

It's like anything else, might not be legal, but everyone does it and it seems to be accepted. Wink

I think if you use commons sense then you should be fine with a dark visor.

I've got a clear one I wear if it's dark/night; a legal tint for when it's dull; and a dark visor for when it's bright and/or sunny. I usually where the dark one in the latter weather conditions. I sometimes carry one of the others when I wear the dark one, but not all the time.

I have crossed a few Police in my dark visor, most recently two on motorbikes and I haven't had them stop me.

I think it would be something they would use against you if you're riding like an idiot, then they would pick up on everything: dark visor, race can, small plate. Of those I only have a dark visor and I don't ride like an idiot, so far so good. Thumbs Up

I went to get one the other day...no problems. Of all the people I know, they have "been told" that as long as they carry a spare clear one, there is never usually a problem.

At the bikesafe weekend in Cheltenham I saw a police rider with a full tint visor on his Police helmet. I was quite surprised.

Wish I'd got a picture, cos that would be a good one to keep in the wallet in case of getting stopped.
