Seats, again...

Ello all..

Theres been a few threds about it but not been able to find it.. there was a link to a guide to recarveing your seat, foam types to use e.t.c. i'm getting the pan soon and have an inexhaustable supply of vynl to cover it (probably will end up doing it half a million times )

Two things i want to do with it..

1.Couple of points are two hard, ends up like being sat on a plank after 100miles, same area every time.. i think the foam is pretty much knackered, so will be replaceing most of it with better stuff and glueing with gluegun..

2.Rear seat could do with being a bit more stepped, mere hint of a hill or fast stoping and my girlfriend ends up slideing towards me

Let us know how you get on with the seat. My partner has an ST1100 but I can't reach the floor properly. I was going to get a second hand seat to mutilate. I figured I could lose an inch or 2 of padding out of it. I don't have a limitless supply of PVC so have to try not to mess it up too many times. Any tips would be welcome.

I read somewhere on the ratbike zone about making seats, maybe recently.

What was said was to use foam off an old soafer or something, but to have it twice as high as you want the seat to be. Then you compress it hard onto your base and wrap gaffa tape around and around so holding it in position, and also allowing you to "mould" the foam into your chosen shape. When done you cover it in your vinyl, and nobody is to know that there's half a roll of gaffa tape under there

Where did you get your vinyl from out of interest? I will be making a rider-only seat for my 550 sometime soon, but haven't sourced either the foam or the vinyl.

Ahh great point..

I'd wandered into one of these equestiran shops and they had gel sadle covers (for £20!), they must be great to sit on! i dont know if they could be cut up though?? (completely forgot about that ) wondering if it could be added without ended up with half a million bumps and creaces in the seat

I'd read the ratbike zone thing too, tis what got me thinking about redoing mine, can't justify £200 getting somebody to do it..

Apparently, the foam they use in bikes tends to be crap, theres truff available (reconfoam,rcoverfoam, something like that) which is far better, + useing a harder foam on the base and softer foam to finish off is ment to work well.. Then there permiable and non permiable foam (and semi permiable)


Carrie78- Makeing the seat narrower where your legs go when stopped will also help allot (as much or more than loping stuff off the top) i'm fugureing useing cling film it could be tested before the final covering

Bugger.. well the shop that had the gel seat things dont have them anymore and has to order them in :/

Where abouts could i get gel pads ?

Try https://www.ppseat.co.uk/ in birmingham the do recovering inculding the gel pads so they might sell you some on there own
